{"id":30383,"date":"2025-04-18T14:03:31","date_gmt":"2025-04-18T14:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/30383\/"},"modified":"2025-04-18T14:03:31","modified_gmt":"2025-04-18T14:03:31","slug":"cutting-out-food-group-just-1-day-a-week-could-be-as-effective-as-intermittent-fasting-for-fat-burn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/30383\/","title":{"rendered":"Cutting out food group just 1 day a week could be as effective as intermittent fasting for fat burn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research suggests that skipping carbs just one day a week could offer similar health benefits to intermittent fasting.<\/p>\n<p>A University of Surrey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/carb-cutting-more-effective-intermittent-fasting-diet\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> has found that low-carb days encourage the body to burn fat for energy, much like fasting diets do.<\/p>\n<p>This approach could improve metabolic health without the challenge of severe calorie restriction that many find difficult to maintain.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists recruited 12 adults aged 20 to 65, all considered overweight or obese.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"2e6a5\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"6d38d91120f0cdd599ffc0c66965525e\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20717%20638'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/woman-measuring-waist.jpg\" width=\"717\" height=\"638\" alt=\"WOMAN MEASURING WAIST\"\/>Increased hunger could lead to overeatingGETTY<\/p>\n<p>Participants followed three different diets, each for 36 hours &#8211; one full day plus two nights&#8217; sleep.<\/p>\n<p>They tried a normal diet, a low-carb diet with normal calories, and a low-carb diet with reduced calories.<\/p>\n<p>After each diet period, researchers measured how participants&#8217; bodies responded.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers discovered that regardless of calorie intake, low-carb diets prompted participants&#8217; bodies to burn fat for energy.<\/p>\n<p>This metabolic response was similar to what occurs during intermittent fasting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we&#8217;re interested in is not necessarily about weight loss, but the metabolic effect of this dietary intervention,&#8221; explained Dr Adam Collins, co-author of the study and Associate Professor of Nutrition at the University of Surrey.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Collins explained that the body is designed to use carbohydrates for energy after meals, then switch to burning fat between meals and overnight.<\/p>\n<p>However, when we eat too much and too frequently, our bodies rarely make this switch, resulting in &#8220;metabolic mismanagement&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This leads to fat accumulating around our waists, inside organs, and in blood vessels, contributing to health problems.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"5a88a\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"6a884918da9f015982dc6f250c228758\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%202119%201415'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/white-rice.jpg\" width=\"2119\" height=\"1415\" alt=\"WHITE RICE\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Periods of reduced carbohydrate intake help the body to start removing accumulated fat<\/p>\n<p>GETTY<\/p>\n<p>Periods of intermittent fasting or reduced carb intake help the body &#8220;clear the decks&#8221; and start removing accumulated fat, according to Dr Collins.<\/p>\n<p>While some people follow low-carb diets permanently, this might impair their ability to process glucose long-term.<\/p>\n<p>Alternating between low-carb days and normal eating appears to be more sustainable, especially for those who enjoy pasta and bread.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Collins emphasised that moderation is key to a healthy diet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No food is a sin,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Carbohydrates aren&#8217;t bad. Fat isn&#8217;t bad.
