{"id":304908,"date":"2025-07-30T21:21:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T21:21:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/304908\/"},"modified":"2025-07-30T21:21:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T21:21:11","slug":"trumps-big-beautiful-bill-orders-museum-to-relocate-space-shuttle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/304908\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump&#8217;s &#8216;Big Beautiful Bill&#8217; Orders Museum to Relocate Space Shuttle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile cuts to arts funding and grants have drawn widespread outrage in the art world, a little-publicized clause in President Donald Trump\u2019s omnibus tax-and-spending package\u2014the so\u2011called \u201cBig Beautiful Bill\u201d\u2014will have a more direct effect on Washington, D.C.\u2019s National Air and Space Museum, especially its Udvar\u2011Hazy Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe provision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/the-smithsonian-institution-owns-the-discovery-museum-resists-trumps-big-beautiful-bill-plan-to-move-space-shuttle-to-houston\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">requires the Smithsonian<\/a> to transfer a \u201cspace vehicle\u201d to NASA, a move widely understood to target the Discovery space shuttle, which has been on display at the Steven F. Udvar\u2011Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, since 2012. It mandates that the move be completed no later than January 4, 2027. <\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-2222627505.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-2222627505.jpg\" alt=\"A sculpture of a giant spider in a big room with people walking underneath it.\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe move is the latest attempt by Republicans and the Trump Administration to dictate the direction of the Smithsonian Institution, a museum network of numerous major institutions, primarily in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe provision found its way into the bill after Texas senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz introduced the \u201cBring the Space Shuttle Home Act\u201d in April, aiming to relocate Discovery to the Johnson Space Center in Houston. That proposed bill stalled in committee, but its main provisions were folded into the larger reconciliation bill\u2014officially titled the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R.\u202f1). Trump signed the bill into law on July\u202f4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTo comply with Senate reconciliation rules, the text refers only to a \u201cspace vehicle\u201d (not Discovery by name) to be selected by the NASA administrator. It allocates $85 million toward the move, with $5 million for planning and transportation and the remainder earmarked for construction of a new exhibition facility in Houston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Smithsonian maintains that it fully owns Discovery, having received \u201call rights, title, interest and ownership\u201d from NASA in 2012, following a decision made in 2011 to send Discovery to the Institution\u2019s Udvar\u2011Hazy Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThis is not a transfer, it\u2019s a heist\u2014a heist by Texas because they lost the competition 12 years ago,\u201d Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat, said during a hearing earlier this month, before withdrawing an amendment titled \u201cHouston, We Have a Problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Smithsonian been under fire for months from the Trump administration, which has accused its museums of promoting \u201cimproper ideology\u201d in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/trump-executive-order-smithsonian-institution-art-history-1234737442\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive order.<\/a> That executive order singled out shows at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn May, the administration claimed to fire Kim Sajet, director of the National Portrait Gallery; the Smithsonian responded by saying that it is independent and that personnel decisions fall under the authority of the Secretary of the Smithsonian, with oversight by the Board of Regents. Sajet initially continued working before stepping down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe bill also cuts overall Smithsonian funding by about 12 percent and eliminates dedicated funding for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/smithsonian-national-museum-of-the-american-latino-launch-challenges-1234727122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long\u2011planned National Museum of the American Latino,<\/a> reducing its staff from about 35 to six.
