This equates to around one in 10 people, and approximately one in five people do not know they have the chronic illness.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that “occurs when some or all of the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed,” Harvard Medical School‘s website explains. In the absence of insulin, “sugar accumulates in the bloodstream rather than entering the cells” and causes “excessive urination and dehydration” and also causes tissue damage.

The CDC estimates that between 5-10% of people with diabetes are diagnosed with Type 1. People of all ages can receive a diagnosis, and there are no known prevention methods.

Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance, meaning cells resist “the normal effect of insulin, which is to drive glucose in the blood into the inside of the cells,” per Harvard Health Publishing. This causes glucose to build up in the blood. Type 2 diabetes, which affects around 90-95% of diabetes patients, can also develop at any age.

Risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes include family history, having prediabetes or gestational diabetes, being over the age of 45 and being overweight or having obesity.

Contributing: Jay Stahl, USA TODAY

‘Gossip Girl’ actress Michelle Trachtenberg dead at 39 Actress Michelle Trachtenberg, known for her role in “Gossip Girl,”…

[5311
5784,4021,18187,18190,4080,5787,4781,203,18184,18189,18185,10957,16350,18183,967,2342,77,3576,1429,7797,3462,5791,7671,18188,6584,9641,4447,12,5772,18186,5179,6591,6581,5697,5598,6093,6589,18182,16346,5181,49,978,659,11729
0":"post-30519","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-united-states","8":"tag-affiliate","9":"tag-arts","10":"tag-blood","11":"tag-blood-sugar-u0026-diabetes","12":"tag-celebrities","13":"tag-celebrities-u0026-entertainment-news","14":"tag-celebrity","15":"tag-celebrity-deaths","16":"tag-centers","17":"tag-centers-for-disease-control","18":"tag-control","19":"tag-death","20":"tag-death-u0026-tragedy","21":"tag-deaths","22":"tag-diabetes","23":"tag-disease","24":"tag-entertainment","25":"tag-for","26":"tag-life","27":"tag-life-now","28":"tag-local","29":"tag-local-affiliate-arts-u0026-entertainment","30":"tag-michelle","31":"tag-michelle-trachtenberg","32":"tag-negative","33":"tag-new","34":"tag-new-york","35":"tag-news","36":"tag-now","37":"tag-ny","38":"tag-overall","39":"tag-overall-negative","40":"tag-point","41":"tag-sugar","42":"tag-the","43":"tag-to","44":"tag-to-the-point","45":"tag-trachtenberg","46":"tag-tragedy","47":"tag-u0026","48":"tag-united-states","49":"tag-us","50":"tag-usa","51":"tag-york
["GET
