{"id":305639,"date":"2025-07-31T03:59:18","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T03:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/305639\/"},"modified":"2025-07-31T03:59:18","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T03:59:18","slug":"the-mancunian-way-on-the-redbricks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/305639\/","title":{"rendered":"The Mancunian Way: On The Redbricks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everybody needs good neighbours<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_imagemaker-52.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Hello,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Bentley House estate was purpose built at a time when flats still had open fires and shared communal laundry spaces, along with underground bomb shelters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They also have balconies, gardens and ample community outdoor space and greenery just a stone\u2019s throw from the city centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Sounds like an estate agent\u2019s pitch for something that would set you back a bit doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In fact, privately-owned flats on this Manchester estate are sold for less than \u00a3200,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u2018Redbricks\u2019, as it\u2019s known, is a bit of an oddity &#8211; just yards away from the glistening<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/deansgate\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Deansgate<\/a> towers but completely separate from the concrete and minimalism of city centre living.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2_Gvs-of-Hulme.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The Redbricks estate overshadowed by the Deansgate towers(Image: Kenny Brown | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Our reporters have visited the estate to chat to residents before, but the lovely thing about Manchester is that you\u2019ll get a different perspective each time you visit a place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">So when reporter James Holt spoke to locals he found a tight-knit community of people who value neighbourliness and their own space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">John Crotty moved to Rockdove Avenue from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/hulme\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Hulme<\/a> Crescents in 1991 and has seen the estate change from one troubled by drug dealing and petty crime to a bit of a green haven beneath the Mancunian Way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Trees and communal gardens line the streets and hanging baskets pepper the homes. Bunting, tree swings and a free book-swapping library are also a key part of this community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But John says pollution from nearby Mancunian Way and Princess Road has worsened his COPD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe are like a halfway house between drug users from the city meeting dealers in<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/moss-side\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Moss Side<\/a>,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd of course, Mancunian Way is right there, and there are always tents and homeless people sleeping underneath.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_imagemaker-51.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Despite all this, he wouldn\u2019t live anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;The best thing about living here is the space we have and the fantastic community down these three avenues. Everyone looks out for one another. People have lived here for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;We have outdoor gardens and real trees, and plants that smell. I still wouldn&#8217;t ever live anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;A lot of us tenants have watched those blocks get higher and higher, closer and closer, encroaching on us. It&#8217;s been a question of will we still be here in the future?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/life-shadow-manchesters-skyscrapers-time-32109938\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">You can read James&#8217; fascinating feature on the estate frozen in time here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">\u2018Like living on Coronation Street&#8217;<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_Islington-marina-fire.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It\u2019s been a dramatic few weeks for the residents of New Islington Marina.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">First, boaters were badly affected by a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/within-just-two-days-could-32083489\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">leak at the marina, which caused water levels to drop drastically<\/a>. And he\u2019s been incredibly candid in talking about his experiences fighting cancer over the years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Neal says his treatment was \u201ca trip to hell\u201d but one that gave him 13 years of \u201cextra time\u201d and has allowed him to watch his youngest daughter play football, get to university and become a beautiful woman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The charity Maggie\u2019s &#8211; which provides cancer support &#8211; has been key in helping Neal and his family cope.
