{"id":305674,"date":"2025-07-31T04:17:17","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T04:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/305674\/"},"modified":"2025-07-31T04:17:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T04:17:17","slug":"brazil-slams-unacceptable-us-sanctions-on-judge-overseeing-bolsonaro-case-donald-trump-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/305674\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil slams \u2018unacceptable\u2019 US sanctions on judge overseeing Bolsonaro case | Donald Trump News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">The US froze Judge de Moraes\u2019s assets, citing his role in arbitrary detentions, censorship, and cases against Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil has criticised the United States Department of the Treasury\u2019s decision to impose sanctions on Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes over alleged suppression of freedom of expression and the ongoing trial of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/24\/brazils-supreme-court-declines-to-arrest-bolsonaro-over-social-media-ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil\u2019s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also released a statement on Wednesday condemning what he called the \u201cUS government\u2019s interference in the Brazilian justice system\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Brazilian government stands in solidarity with [de Moraes], who is the target of sanctions motivated by the actions of Brazilian politicians who betray our country and our people in defence of their own interests,\u201d President Lula said, without naming Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n<p>De Moraes is overseeing a case against the former president, who stands accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/6\/29\/bolsonaro-rallies-supporters-in-brazil-amid-supreme-court-coup-plot-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">masterminding a plot<\/a> to orchestrate a coup and stay in power after his 2022 election defeat to Lula.<\/p>\n<p>Announcing sanctions against de Moraes earlier on Wednesday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the Brazilian Supreme Court justice had \u201ctaken it upon himself to be judge and jury in an unlawful witch-hunt\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe Moraes is responsible for an oppressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary detentions that violate human rights, and politicised prosecutions \u2013 including against former President Jair Bolsonaro,\u201d Bessent said.<\/p>\n<p>De Moraes was sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Act, which allows the US to impose economic penalties against foreigners it considers to have a record of corruption or human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p>Bessent\u2019s statement accused de Moraes of \u201cserious human rights abuse[s]\u201d for targeting opposition politicians \u2013 including Bolsonaro \u2013 journalists, newspapers, and US and international companies, including social media platforms.<\/p>\n<p>The decision orders the freezing of any assets or property de Moraes may have in the US.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump previously tied tariffs on Brazil to what he called a \u201cwitch-hunt\u201d against his right-wing ally.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter in mid-July announcing a 50-percent tariff on Brazilian goods, which will start on August 6, Trump opened the message with criticism of Bolsonaro\u2019s prosecution.
