{"id":305731,"date":"2025-07-31T04:49:18","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T04:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/305731\/"},"modified":"2025-07-31T04:49:18","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T04:49:18","slug":"neave-brown-affordable-housing-award-2025-shortlist-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/305731\/","title":{"rendered":"Neave Brown affordable housing award 2025 shortlist announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the institute, this year\u2019s shortlisted projects \u2013 which include the Appleby Blue Almshouse in Southwark by former Stirling Prize-winner Witherford Watson Mann Architects \u2013 all \u2018use exceptional design to address wider social and environmental issues, placing people and communities at the heart of their work\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The other finalists are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/buildings\/hazelmead-a-diy-utopia-designed-by-people-for-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bridport Cohousing<\/a>, a 53-home scheme 16 years in the making led by Barefoot Architects, Archio\u2019s community-led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/buildings\/citizens-house-by-archio-for-the-people-by-the-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Citizen House<\/a> project in Lewisham, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/adamkhan.co.uk\/projects\/tower-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tower Court<\/a> council housing development in Hackney by Adam Khan Architects with Muf Architecture\/Art and Child Graddon Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>Dean Pike, founding director of Al-awad Pike, co-founder of last year\u2019s winner and chair of the 2025 jury, said the shortlist \u2018reflects the enduring relevance of Neave Brown\u2019s vision \u2013 that housing should foster community, offer dignity and be rooted in place\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u2018The jury was unanimous in recognising that each project responds, in its own way, to the social and environmental pressures shaping housing today, reworking familiar typologies and exploring new models of shared living and sustainability.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He said the shortlist includes projects from urban almshouses to rural co-housing to community infill development and \u2018family homes woven into shared landscape\u2019, adding that \u2018each project places people at its centre\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Neave Brown Award for Housing is named after modernist architect and social housing pioneer Neave Brown (1929-2018).<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-709018\" class=\"size-mbm-image-2xlarge wp-image-709018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/CITIZENS-HOUSE-64-Edit-LO-RES-800x1200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"930\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"inline_image_source\"> Source:French+Tye<\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-709018\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Neave Brown Awards for Housing 2025 finalist: Citizens House by Archio<\/p>\n<p>The four projects shortlisted for the 2025 Neave Brown Award for Housing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appleby Blue Almshouse by Witherford Watson Mann Architects<\/strong><br \/>A \u2018re-interpreted traditional almshouse\u2019 with 57 homes for older people in Bermondsey, Southwark. The project involved private developers, public money and voluntary organisations to create a \u2018socially conscious\u2019 example of sheltered housing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Citizens House by Archio<br \/><\/strong> An 11-unit affordable homes development in Lewisham which promotes interaction among residents while providing a play space for children.
