After serving notice last year<\/a> of her intention to sue for defamation over Say Nothing, former Irish Republican Army member Marian Price has officially brought a suit against the House of Mouse. Depicted in the series by the actor Hazel Doupe, Price became (in)famous in the 1970s for her participation in the Old Bailey car bombing and subsequent hunger strike in prison. The FX series follows the radicalization of the Belfast-born Price sisters as well as the disappearance of Jean McConville, alleged to have been abducted and murdered by the IRA.<\/p>\n

Price\u2019s defamation suit has to do with the series\u2019 big finale reveal, in which she is depicted \u201cas having carried out the execution-style murder\u201d of McConville, per her filing. Per <\/a>The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, she is now calling for damages and an injunction preventing defendants Disney and Minim UK Productions Limited \u201cfrom further publishing the same or similar defamatory statements.\u201d She also wants Disney to remove the scene that shows her committing the crime from the episode altogether.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Price has denied killing McConville since the allegation was raised in Patrick Radden Keefe\u2019s book upon which the adaptation is based. She apparently threatened a lawsuit against Keefe\u2019s publisher, which never came to fruition. Price\u2019s lawyer previously asserted that \u201cit is clear that the instant allegation is not based on a single iota of evidence.\u201d However, Keefe stands by it: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have published Marian\u2019s name and suggested that she murdered Jean McConville if I had even one per cent doubt that it was true. It would be unconscionable to make such an accusation if I was not completely certain. But I was certain,\u201d Keefe told <\/a>Sunday World<\/a> last year. \u201cShe has denied it, though I would note that it took her five months from when I initially approached her solicitor for comment back in May to do so. I stand by my reporting. I\u2019m quite transparent about my process of deduction in the book, so readers can decide for themselves whether they are persuaded.\u201d<\/p>\n

The creators of the Say Nothing show reiterated as much when discussing the finale with <\/a>The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. \u201cTo me, the ending in the book\u2014and I know this is true for Patrick as well\u2014is not speculative. It\u2019s definitely not meant to be, \u2018this is what might\u2019ve happened.\u2019 It was really thoroughly fact-checked by multiple sources,\u201d Josh Zetumer said. \u201cSo despite the narrative device that Patrick uses of putting himself in the story, the ending is meant to be definitive: This is the killer of Jean McConville. If Patrick didn\u2019t feel that way, he wouldn\u2019t have printed it. And if we didn\u2019t feel [that] way, we wouldn\u2019t have put it on TV.\u201d<\/p>\n
