{"id":305928,"date":"2025-07-31T06:39:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T06:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/305928\/"},"modified":"2025-07-31T06:39:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T06:39:15","slug":"tax-rises-in-autumn-would-force-our-prices-up-retailers-tell-reeves-retail-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/305928\/","title":{"rendered":"Tax rises in autumn would force our prices up, retailers tell Reeves | Retail industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Rachel Reeves has been warned by Britain\u2019s biggest retailers that tax rises in her autumn budget could trigger higher shop prices, hitting household incomes and the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">With high street chains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/mar\/20\/rate-uk-shop-closures-rise-after-budget-tax-changes-report\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closing stores<\/a> and cutting jobs, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said two-thirds of finance directors predicted there would be further price increases over the next year, even before any rise in tax in the autumn budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Iceland, Poundland and New Look were among major retailers to announce store closures in recent months, amid business warnings over the impact of tax rises in the chancellor\u2019s first budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A survey of retail industry finance directors by the BRC, which represents more than 9,000 stores that employ 300,000 workers, found that 85% had raised prices in response to measures brought in since Labour came to power in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the BRC, said a fresh round of tax increases would force retailers to push up prices further and leave many households struggling to cope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cRetail was squarely in the firing line of the last budget, with the industry hit by \u00a37bn in new costs and taxes,\u201d she said. \u201cRetailers have done everything they can to shield their customers from higher costs, but given their slim margins and the rising cost of employing staff, price rises were inevitable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The UK\u2019s headline inflation rate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/jul\/16\/uk-inflation-labour-economic-scrutiny\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jumped to 3.6% in June<\/a>, according to official figures, while a BRC-NielsenIQ monitor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/jul\/29\/rising-uk-food-prices-turn-cash-strapped-shoppers-away-from-high-street\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food price inflation increased to 4%<\/a> this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The BRC said its own forecasts showed that food inflation would accelerate to 6% by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Retailers suffered a squeeze in April from the government\u2019s \u00a325bn rise in employer national insurance contributions (NICs) and 6.7% increase in the \u201cnational living wage\u201d, while global uncertainty and rising unemployment have encouraged households to increase their savings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Reeves is expected to seek ways to raise funds in the autumn to cover a shortfall in the public finances which some analysts estimate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/jun\/15\/reeves-obr-revised-forecast-tax-spending-plans-20bn-hole-autumn-budget\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could be as large as \u00a320bn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The chancellor is rumoured to be considering extending a freeze on income tax thresholds to close the spending gap, but businesses fear they could be in line for further tax rises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">According to the BRC survey, 56% of finance directors are pessimistic about the year ahead, and only 11% were optimistic.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-12\" class=\"dcr-jzxpee\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-rsfwa\">Sign up to Business Today<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">Get set for the working day \u2013 we&#8217;ll point you to all the business news and analysis you need every morning<\/p>\n<p><strong>Privacy Notice: <\/strong>Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties.
