Passengers travelling by train between East Kilbride and Glasgow are now benefitting from a \u00a37m package of access improvements, with new lifts at Giffnock station going live.<\/p>\n
The newly commissioned lifts at Giffnock, along with those already in use at the new Hairmyres station, make it easier for passengers to reach platforms – particularly those with mobility challenges, luggage, or prams.<\/p>\n
Similar improvements are planned for East Kilbride station after it opens next month.<\/p>\n
The upgrades are part of the \u00a3144m East Kilbride enhancement project. Funded by the Scottish Government, it aims to decarbonise the line and deliver more reliable rail services.<\/p>\n

These upgrades may seem like small changes, but they can have a big impact, especially for those who previously faced barriers when travelling.<\/p>\n \u201cBy improving access at stations, we\u2019re helping people stay connected to work, education, and their communities. It\u2019s a significant step towards a more inclusive and welcoming railway for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n READ MORE: Housebuilder to stage special events for buyers at Lanarkshire developments<\/a><\/p>\n Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, continued: \u201cWe are committed to making Scotland\u2019s Railway accessible for all, so it\u2019s fantastic to see the work to improve access at Giffnock and Hairmyres complete and the new lifts ready for use.<\/p>\n \u201cThe improved access will make a real difference to the daily lives of many of our customers, enabling easier, and more comfortable journeys.\u201d<\/p>\n The East Kilbride enhancement project continues to progress. Several upgrades have already been completed along the route, including the opening of a new \u00a316m station at Hairmyres in May, new footbridges at Busby, Clarkston, and Giffnock stations, the renewal of the railway bridge in Busby, and the installation of a new road bridge on Thornliebank Road.<\/p>\n Electric trains are expected to be running on the route by the end of the year.<\/p>\n The project is due to complete in December 2025.
