Rachel Reeves<\/a> is facing growing calls to ditch the state pension triple lock after a stark warning from the International Monetary Fund.<\/p>\n

The global financial watchdog warned that the Chancellor will struggle to keep the public finances in check without either raising taxes or cutting spending – but would scrapping the triple lock altogether be a fairer solution? Take our poll below.<\/p>\n

The \u201cpension<\/a> triple lock\u201d is basically a promise from the government to make sure the State Pension keeps going up annually. Each year, your pension will rise by whichever is highest: inflation, average earnings growth, or 2.5%. So even if inflation\u2019s low, you\u2019re still guaranteed at least that 2.5% boost.<\/p>\n

The whole idea is to help pensioners keep up with the rising cost of living and make sure the value of their pension doesn\u2019t shrink over time. But, all this could change.<\/p>\n

In a significant move, the IMF suggested that Rachel Reeves<\/a> might have to reconsider Labour’s pledge not to raise taxes on working people, and called for potential reforms to pensions<\/a> and public services. The report stated: “The triple lock could be replaced with a policy of indexing the state pension to the cost of living.”<\/p>\n

It also proposed introducing charges for higher earners using NHS<\/a> services and broadening means testing for benefits, arguing that access to public services should “depend more on an individual’s capacity to pay”.<\/p>\n
