My children loved your books. So did and so do I.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Francesca Dow, head of children&#8217;s literature at Penguin Random House, said: &#8220;Allan was one of the most extraordinary authors I have had the privilege and pleasure to work with. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;His brilliant books \u2013 so many of them created with his late wife, Janet, the highly talented illustrator \u2013 have been described as &#8216;mini masterpieces&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Allan&#8217;s are some of the very best \u2013 true classics, which will be loved by children and families for years to come. Dear Allan, we will all miss you enormously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ahlberg is survived by his wife Vanessa, daughter Jessica and stepdaughters Saskia and Johanna.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Born in Croydon in 1938, he was brought up by his adoptive parents in Oldbury, and worked as a postman, plumber and gravedigger before training to become a teacher at Sunderland Teacher Training College, where he met his first wife Janet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 1975, the Ahlbergs published their first book together, Here are the Brick Street Boys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">That was swiftly followed by The Old Joke Book, Burglar Bill and Each Peach Pear Plum, for which Janet was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustrators in 1978.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Jolly Postman, which was published in 1991, won the Kurt Maschler Award and has sold over six million copies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The second in the series, The Jolly Christmas Postman (1991), won a second Kate Greenaway Medal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">His book Woof!, about a little boy who turns into a dog, inspired a TV series which ran on former ITV between 1989 and 1997. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He made headlines in 2014 when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-28244859\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turned down<\/a> a lifetime achievement award after discovering it was sponsored by Amazon, which was facing criticism over its tax arrangements at the time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In a tribute on X, he said: &#8220;You were a pioneer of great children&#8217;s literature, both in picture&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":307387,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3938],"tags":[3444,77,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-307386","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-books","8":"tag-books","9":"tag-entertainment","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114949597082839790","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/307386","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=307386"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/307386\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/307387"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=307386"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=307386"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=307386"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
