(Reuters: Valentyn Ogirenko)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He posted a video of burning ruins, saying people were still trapped under the rubble of one partially-ruined residential building as of the morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kyiv authorities have declared Friday to be a day of mourning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Russia&#8217;s Defence Ministry said it had targeted and hit Ukrainian military airfields and ammunition depots as well as businesses linked to what it called Kyiv&#8217;s military-industrial complex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the attack had amounted to the largest number of injured civilians in a single night in the city since Russia started its full-scale invasion almost three and a half years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The attack also came just days after US President Donald Trump <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-28\/donald-trump-slashes-russia-ukraine-ceasefire-demand\/105583718\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued a 10-day ultimatum for Moscow<\/a> to halt its invasion, or face sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Russian forces capture key Donetsk military hub<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Russia said on Thursday it had captured the town of Chasiv Yar, which had been a strategically important military hub for Ukrainian forces in the eastern Donetsk region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The town &#8220;was liberated by Russian forces&#8221;, Russia&#8217;s defence ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A Ukrainian military spokesperson called the claim &#8220;propaganda&#8221;, but a video posted by a Russian military unit and verified by Reuters showed a Russian paratroop banner and the national flag being raised by soldiers in the desolate ruins of the town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Of course, this is not true,&#8221; Viktor Tregubov, a spokesperson for the Khortytsia Operational Strategic Group of Forces, told AFP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Taking control of Chasiv Yar would represent a major military boon for Russia, which has been making incremental but steady territorial gains for months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Home to around 12,000 people before the war but now largely destroyed, the town&#8217;s capture would pave the way for Russian forces to advance on remaining civilian strongholds in the eastern Donetsk region.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-29\/russian-strikes-ukraine-prison-and-medical-facility\/105587352\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine calls deadly Russian strike on Zaporizhzhia prison &#8216;another war crime&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Russian glide bombs and missiles strike a Ukrainian prison and a medical facility, with US President Donald Trump threatening to punish Russia unless the attacks stop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These include the garrison city of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, important logistical bases for the Ukrainian military and home to many civilians, who have up to now not fled the fighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Moscow&#8217;s forces are also mounting intense pressure on the city of Pokrovsk, about 60 kilometres south-west of Chasiv Yar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Kremlin has made the capture of the Donetsk region a priority since it claimed the industrial region as part of Russia in September 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Military analyst Emil Kastehelmi, co-founder of the Finland-based Black Bird Group, said it was likely that battles were continuing near Chasiv Yar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The terrain of Chasiv Yar has favoured the defender,&#8221;
