Box Clinic, Risca’s warning over unsafe treatments

The Sugar Box Clinic, based in Risca, has spoken out after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed 38 cases of botulism in England between June 4 and July 14.

The cases have been linked to unlicensed or counterfeit botulinum toxin used in cosmetic procedures.

Chantalle Coombes, registered nurse prescriber and clinic director at The Sugar Box Clinic, said: “This warning is deeply concerning, but it highlights the importance of choosing a regulated medical clinic.

“We only use genuine prescription medication, sourced exclusively from authorised pharmacies confirmed directly by manufacturers.

“This eliminates any risk of counterfeit or unsafe products entering our clinic.”

The clinic emphasises full traceability of every product, recording batch numbers, expiry dates, and supply chains for each treatment.

All injectables are prescribed and administered by registered healthcare professionals.

UKHSA is urging the public to only seek cosmetic procedures from qualified professionals in regulated medical environments.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine and should never be sourced or used outside of these settings.

Symptoms of botulism, which can appear up to four weeks after treatment, include difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, drooping eyelids, blurred vision, and breathing difficulties.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms after cosmetic injections is advised to contact NHS 111 immediately.

Ms Coombes said: “Unfortunately, unqualified practitioners using counterfeit products are putting people’s health at risk.

“We want to reassure our clients that we will never compromise on safety.

“Every treatment at The Sugar Box Clinic is carried out to the highest medical standards, with genuine, licensed products to keep our clients safe.”

UKHSA has also issued guidance to healthcare professionals, urging them to consider botulism in patients who may have recently undergone aesthetic procedures.

Treatment for suspected cases includes the administration of anti-toxin.

The agency is advising the public to check that any aesthetic practitioner is licensed and that the products used are genuine and legally sourced.

The Sugar Box Clinic, which describes itself as a multi-award-winning practice, said it remains committed to transparency, professionalism, and patient safety.

Ms Coombes said: “This warning is deeply concerning, but it highlights the importance of choosing a regulated medical clinic.”

The Sugar Box Clinic, based in Risca,
