Russian leader Vladimir Putin traveled to\u00a0the remote Valaam Monastery after US\u00a0President Donald Trump issued a\u00a0sharp ultimatum over Ukraine and threatened to\u00a0cut Russia out of\u00a0India\u2019s oil market\u2014a key outlet for nearly half of\u00a0Moscow\u2019s crude exports, the Kremlin press service reported on\u00a0August\u00a01.<\/p>\n

Putin made<\/a> the pilgrimage to\u00a0the Valaam Monastery in\u00a0the Karelia region alongside Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.<\/p>\n

The two authoritarian allies visited the Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration) Monastery and took part in\u00a0a\u00a0prayer service at\u00a0the Church of\u00a0the Smolensk Icon of\u00a0the Mother of\u00a0God.<\/p>\n

Photos released by\u00a0the Kremlin show Putin and Lukashenko holding candles and surrounded by\u00a0clergy from the Russian Orthodox Church during the religious ceremony.<\/p>\n

Following the service, the two leaders held private talks, the Kremlin said, without disclosing details.<\/p>\n

The visit came just hours after Trump said he\u00a0would impose sweeping new sanctions on\u00a0Russia and potentially block its oil exports to\u00a0India if\u00a0Moscow did not change its course in\u00a0Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The trip to\u00a0Valaam\u2014often portrayed as\u00a0a\u00a0place of\u00a0spiritual reflection\u2014appeared timed to\u00a0convey symbolic resolve amid mounting international pressure.<\/p>\n

Previously, it\u00a0became known that at\u00a0least four tankers carrying Russian oil idled<\/a> off India\u2019s western coast after local refineries refused to\u00a0accept the shipments.<\/p>\n

The Achilles and Elyte tankers, each carrying around 700,000 barrels of\u00a0Urals crude, are anchored near the port city of\u00a0Jamnagar. The vessels loaded their cargo in\u00a0late June from the Russian ports of\u00a0Primorsk and Ust-Luga and were scheduled to\u00a0offload on\u00a0August 2\u00a0and\u00a03. Both ships are under EU\u00a0and UK\u00a0sanctions, raising compliance concerns for potential buyers.<\/p>\n

Earlier, US\u00a0President Donald Trump condemned<\/a> Russia\u2019s latest deadly missile strike on\u00a0Kyiv, calling the attack \u201cdisgusting\u201d and promising new sanctions against Moscow.<\/p>\n
