towards the ambitious targets after landing the equally necessary defensive reinforcements in shrewd fashion.

The left wing is where Leeds’ focus lies at the minute after the pre-season failed Igor Paixao pursuit

Efforts to sign Paixao from Feyenoord intensified towards the end of last week with an improved bid lodged, claimed to be in the region of (REUTERS/Pedro Nunes)

Leeds’ interest in the Eredivisie sensation only goes to show what Daniel Farke requires for next season, and it’s a drastic enhancement of his attacking options, despite his side scoring 95 goals last season in the Championship.

A deal for the Brazilian wasn’t to be in the end, with Marseille eventually securing an agreement with Feyenoord early this week.

It was an on-and-off saga and it never looked absolutely certain that Leeds would be able to complete a deal for Paixao, even if they managed to get close, but serious moves made for him underlined how the 49ers will be bringing in a new starting winger at Elland Road before the end of the window.

Jack Harrison faces repercussions of Leeds United chasing Igor Paixao

Leeds needed a new winger from the moment Manor Solomon’s loan expired, and him returning to Spurs gives Leeds the opportunity to find a major improvement – even if the 26-year-old was key to promotion in April and May particularly.

Four options are available out wide to Farke as things stand – Willy Gnonto, Dan James, Largie Ramazani and Jack Harrison – while only Gnonto and James come into this season with great form in competitive fixtures.

(REUTERS/Tony Obrien)

Ramazani’s blistering pace, direct attacking threat, and quality off both feet makes him a viable top flight option too, and it leaves Harrison as the black sheep of Leeds’ current options for more reasons than one.

Not only is he someone that Leeds fans would rather see shifted out on a permanent deal after leaving on loan for two straight seasons, but those two loan spells were largely abysmal, not replicating the quality he showed in three PL campaigns at Elland Road, and not having the standout qualities that his teammates have now.

James’ lightning-quick speed, Ramazani’s speed and skill, and Gnonto’s intelligence and fluidity are all differential qualities that allow them to take to the top flight well, but we’re yet to see any such standout quality from Harrison in pre-season to make him more of a useful option, which will be further outlined if (when) Leeds find their new winger signing that is likely to be the best of the bunch.

Five winger options could be enough for Leeds going into a Premier League survival bid, especially if a fluid number 10 signing is also brought in, but the pecking order won’t go in Harrison’s favour based on these developments.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments
