{"id":310388,"date":"2025-08-01T22:40:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T22:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/310388\/"},"modified":"2025-08-01T22:40:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T22:40:14","slug":"slovenia-becomes-first-eu-country-to-ban-weapons-trade-with-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/310388\/","title":{"rendered":"Slovenia becomes first EU country to ban weapons trade with Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n         Published on<br \/>\n            01\/08\/2025 &#8211; 15:18 GMT+2\n            <\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n          ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>Slovenia will be \u201cthe first European country\u201d to ban weapons trade with Israel in response to Tel Aviv\u2019s actions in Gaza, Prime Minister Robert Golob told the country\u2019s Press Agency (STA) on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the initiative of Prime Minister Dr. Robert Golob, the government today adopted a decision prohibiting the export and transit of military weapons and equipment from or through the Republic of Slovenia to Israel, as well as the import of such goods from Israel into the Republic of Slovenia,\u201d according to a statement cited by STA and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.si\/novice\/2025-07-31-slovenija-je-kot-prva-evropska-drzava-prepovedala-uvoz-izvoz-in-tranzit-orozja-v-in-iz-izraela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>published<\/strong><\/a> on the Slovenian government\u2019s webpage.<\/p>\n<p>The statement added that Golob\u2019s decision stems from his promise to \u201cact  independently\u201d against Israel if the EU \u201cfailed to adopt concrete measures by mid-July\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to internal disagreements and lack of unity, the European Union is currently unable to fulfil this task,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>EU member states have now repeatedly failed to rally enough support to respond to Israel\u2019s ongoing actions in\u00a0Gaza. Despite a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/06\/20\/eu-review-indicates-israel-breached-human-rights-in-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>review<\/strong> <\/a>of the EU-Israel association agreement which revealed that the country\u2019s actions in Gaza were violating human rights, the EU 27 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/07\/10\/eu-and-israel-agree-substantial-aid-access-for-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>couldn\u2019t agree<\/strong> <\/a>on any of the 10 sanctions proposed to them, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/07\/30\/eu-fails-to-agree-israeli-suspension-from-research-fund-over-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>partial suspension<\/strong><\/a> of Israel&#8217;s access to the EU&#8217;s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.<\/p>\n<p>An embargo on arms to Israel was never tabled among options for action at EU level. United Nations and EU rules state that human rights violations and war crimes should give rise to arms sales embargoes. In addition, following the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, Italy, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands have already halted or restricted exports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Israel imports\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sipri.org\/commentary\/topical-backgrounder\/2024\/how-top-arms-exporters-have-responded-war-gaza?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>almost 70%<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>of its arsenal from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sipri.org\/media\/press-release\/2025\/ukraine-worlds-biggest-arms-importer-united-states-dominance-global-arms-exports-grows-russian?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>US<\/strong><\/a>, the world\u2019s largest arms exporter but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sipri.org\/commentary\/topical-backgrounder\/2024\/how-top-arms-exporters-have-responded-war-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Germany<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>is Israel\u2019s second supplier.\u00a0Since 7 October 2023, it has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dserver.bundestag.de\/btd\/21\/002\/2100284.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>exported<\/strong><\/a> \u20ac<a href=\"https:\/\/dserver.bundestag.de\/btd\/21\/002\/2100284.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>485 millions&#8217;<\/strong><\/a> worth of weapons. Italy ranks third, supplying less than 1%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Slovenia has been one of the most vocal EU countries calling for EU action against Israel.
