After Donald Trump<\/a> ordered the firing of a federal government official in charge of labor statistics, experts and opposition politicians have expressed alarm that the \u201ccredibility\u201d of US economic data was at risk.<\/p>\n

The US president claimed without evidence that Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of labor statistics, had \u201crigged\u201d job numbers \u201cin order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad\u201d, after data showed jobs growth stalled<\/a> this summer, prompting accusations that the president was \u201cfiring the messenger\u201d.<\/p>\n

Bill Beach, a former Heritage Foundation economist who was picked by Trump in 2018 to oversee labor statistics, denounced<\/a> what he called the \u201ctotally groundless firing\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cPoliticizing economic statistics is a self-defeating act,\u201d said Michael Madowitz, the principal economist at the Roosevelt Institute\u2019s Roosevelt Forward, who added that \u201ccredibility is far easier to lose than rebuild, and the credibility of America\u2019s economic data is the foundation on which we\u2019ve built the strongest economy in the world\u201d.<\/p>\n

Senate Democrat Ron Wyden said \u201cthis is the act of somebody who is soft, weak and afraid to own up to the reality of the damage his chaos is inflicting on our economy\u201d.<\/p>\n

The move came as markets around the world were roiled by Trump\u2019s latest tariff announcement, which left more than 60 countries scrambling to secure trade deals.<\/p>\n
