{"id":311493,"date":"2025-08-02T08:50:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T08:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/311493\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T08:50:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T08:50:15","slug":"kemi-badenoch-says-she-no-longer-identifies-as-nigerian-politics-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/311493\/","title":{"rendered":"Kemi Badenoch says she no longer identifies as Nigerian | Politics News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kemi Badenoch has said she does not see herself as Nigerian and no longer has a passport for the country she grew up in.<\/p>\n<p>The leader of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/conservatives-5699\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservative<\/a><\/strong> Party was born in the London suburb of Wimbledon but was raised in Lagos, Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>When Nigeria&#8217;s economy collapsed in the 1990s, Ms <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/kemi-badenoch-10252\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Badenoch<\/a><\/strong>, then aged 16, moved back to the UK to live with a family friend and continue her education.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to former MP and television presenter Gyles Brandreth on the Rosebud podcast, Ms Badenoch said as most of her life has been in the UK, she &#8220;does not identify&#8221; as Nigerian.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m Nigerian through ancestry, by birth, despite not being born there because of my parents&#8230; but by identity I&#8217;m not really,&#8221; the North West Essex MP said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have not renewed my Nigerian passport, I think, not since the early 2000s.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" loading=\"lazy\" intrinsicsize=\"768x432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/skynews-kemi-badenoch-conservative_6970030.jpg\"   alt=\"Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch talking to members of the media during a visit to the The Royal Welsh Show.&#13;&#10;Pic: PA\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        Image:<br \/>\n        Badenoch talking to members of the media on a recent visit to the Royal Welsh Show. Pic: PA<\/p>\n<p>Ms Badenoch added that her home is now where her family is, which includes her extended political family.<\/p>\n<p>On Nigeria, she said: &#8220;I know the country very well, I have a lot of family there, and I&#8217;m very interested in what happens there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But home is where my now family is, and my now family is my children, it&#8217;s my husband and my brother and his children, in-laws.
