Emergency officials warned the risk of tsumani surges was still very high following the 8.8 earthquake near Russia and people shouldn't go sightseeing at shorelines.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nPeople on the beach at Lyall Bay, Wellington, 31 July 2025.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ \/ Mark Papalii\n<\/p>\n<p>An earth scientist says strong and unusual currents will continue this weekend, after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/world\/568615\/why-russia-s-megathrust-earthquake-was-among-biggest-ever-recorded-but-damage-was-minimal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magnitude 8.8 earthquake<\/a> off the coast of Russia on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The national tsunami advisory issued after the quake <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/568466\/tsunami-warnings-lifted-for-new-zealand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was cancelled<\/a> early-afternoon Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Earth Sciences New Zealand principle scientist Graham Leonard told Saturday Morning the scale of the earthquake &#8211; one of the largest ever recorded &#8211; meant it was taking a while to settle.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a huge earthquake. The largest earthquake in the world in 14 years.
