That commitment doesn\u2019t end where campus protests begin.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the Hamas massacre in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, antisemitic harassment surged at many elite universities \u2212 not just in the form of protest slogans but also in physical exclusion, intimidation and administrative indifference. As Jewish students found themselves targeted because of their identity, too many institutions failed to act.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the legal system is stepping in. Several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/graphics\/2025\/07\/27\/trump-columbia-deal-settlement-future-of-colleges\/85355613007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/graphics\/2025\/07\/27\/trump-columbia-deal-settlement-future-of-colleges\/85355613007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top-ranked universities<\/a> \u2212 including Harvard, UCLA and my own undergraduate alma mater, Northwestern \u2212 have been forced to reckon with their failures through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/education\/2025\/07\/25\/columbia-trump-deal-other-ivy-league-schools\/85363856007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/education\/2025\/07\/25\/columbia-trump-deal-other-ivy-league-schools\/85363856007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high-profile settlements and federally mandated reforms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a growing body of precedent: When universities permit faith-based hostility toward students to flourish, they risk violating civil rights law.<\/p>\n<p>UCLA agrees to settle antisemitism complaints<\/p>\n<p>The University of California, Los Angeles,\u00a0announced July 29 that it will <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ucla-settlement-jewish-students-professor-protest-suit-216b78e0ea29e529668aecf5d1019b47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pay $6 million to settle claims<\/a> brought by Jewish students and a professor who were blocked from accessing parts of campus during pro-Palestinian encampments. University security erected barricades and allowed selective access, effectively creating what students called a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/ucla-pay-6-million-settle-complaints-antisemitic-discrimination-jewish-students\/17352511\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jew Exclusion Zone<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Terms of the settlement include direct compensation to the plaintiffs, funding for Jewish organizations, new protest oversight rules and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-07\/frankel-settlement-agreement-fully-executed-w-ex-a.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 15-year commitment<\/a> to civil rights monitoring. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-finds-university-california-los-angeles-violation-federal-civil-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Justice Department weighed in<\/a>,\u00a0asserting\u00a0that\u00a0UCLA had created a discriminatory environment in violation of Title VI and the equal protection clause.<\/p>\n<p>In January,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvardmagazine.com\/2025\/01\/harvard-settles-antisemitism-lawsuits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harvard University\u00a0settled\u00a0two civil rights lawsuits<\/a> brought by Jewish students and advocacy organizations, including the Brandeis Center. The plaintiffs documented a pattern of threats, encampments and institutional silence that left Jewish students vulnerable and alienated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Opinion: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2025\/07\/17\/antisemitism-israel-zionism-mental-health\/85206011007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">America&#8217;s mental health field is overrun with antisemitism. It&#8217;s dangerous.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Harvard\u2019s settlement includes a commitment to adopt the\u00a0International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, which helps distinguish between criticism of Israeli policies and unlawful harassment based on Jewish identity.<\/p>\n<p>The university also agreed to improve staff training, appoint an antisemitism coordinator and publish annual public reports on bias complaints. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/media-relations\/2025\/01\/21\/press-release-settlement-harvard-brandeis-ctr-jafe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harvard continues to deny wrongdoing<\/a>, but its policy changes speak volumes.<\/p>\n<p>Northwestern deal with protesters raises objections<\/p>\n<p>My alma mater,\u00a0Northwestern, made headlines of its own \u2212 not for a court settlement but for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2024\/05\/03\/northwestern-under-fire-for-deal-with-pro-palestine-activists\/73562034007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">controversial\u00a0deal\u00a0with student protesters<\/a>. Donors withheld millions of dollars in gifts. They reaffirm the principle that no student should face exclusion, threats or intimidation based on religion or ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a principle I embrace not just as an advocate, but also as a mother and a committed Catholic. What starts with antisemitism rarely ends there. A university that tolerates harassment of Jewish students will likely fail other students of faith.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Institutions of higher education must create space for debate without sacrificing the dignity and safety of their students. The stakes are no longer just a matter of reputation \u2212 they\u2019re legal, financial and moral.<\/p>\n<p>From Harvard Yard to the hills of Westwood to the shores of Lake Michigan, the tide is turning. Universities are being reminded \u2212 by courts, donors and parents \u2212 that equality under the law is not optional.
