<\/p>\nAmid emotional scenes, hundreds said farewell to murder victims Vanessa Whyte (45), and James (14) and Sara Rutledge (13), in Barefield, Co Clare.<\/p>\n
Regina Whyte said the family\u2019s sole consolation was that the three would be side-by-side for ever.<\/p>\n
To sustained applause from mourners, she added: \u201cFor us, as a family, the only comfort we have is that Vanessa, James and Sara are together and finally safe.<\/p>\n
\u201cVanessa will have her children either side of her forever, as they were when they were alive.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ahead of the service, three hearses had slowly made their way through the village\u2019s main street, which was lined with mourners in GAA jerseys.<\/p>\n
The three were killed in a shooting at a property near Maguiresbridge on July 23.<\/p>\n
Agricultural contractor Ian Rutledge (43), who died in hospital on Monday, is the only suspect in the triple murder-suicide probe.<\/p>\n
Bishop of Ferns Ger Nash, who led the service, referred to the \u201cvulnerability of women to pain inflicted by others\u201d.<\/p>\n
Mourners, including many from the school and sporting community in Fermanagh, made the journey to Barefield, Vanessa\u2019s native village, for the funeral.<\/p>\n
In a eulogy, her sister Regina said that the three were \u201ctaken from this world in a cruel and vicious manner\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are no words available to express how this has impacted our family and their friends,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe as a family have been robbed of both a relationship with our sister and a chance to see James and Sara grow up, and they have been robbed of the remainder of their lives.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has taken us 11 days to be in a position to bring Vanessa, James and Sara back to Clare. This was supposed to be a joyous occasion where Vanessa would see her new nephew and Sara and James would meet their baby cousin, Harry Joe, for the first time.<\/p>\n
\u201cInstead we are in the position of choosing coffins, final burial places and funeral hymns.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Whyte said James and Sara were the focus of her sister\u2019s world.<\/p>\n
She recalled how James\u2019 first presents were a hurley and sliotar.<\/p>\n
\u201cJames\u2019 smile was infectious, and his loyalty was strong,\u201d she said<\/p>\n
Sara\u2019s dream was to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a vet, Ms Whyte said. At school, the \u201csassy child became a beautiful, loved teen\u201d with \u201ca smile that would light up a room \u2026 she was a normal, happy, 13-year-old teen.\u201d<\/p>\n
Earlier, hundreds of people, many wearing sports jerseys in line with the family\u2019s wish for bright colours, lined the main street as the hearses passed slowly by on their way to the service at the Church of the Immaculate Conception.<\/p>\n
The three coffins were placed at the front of the church, side by side, topped with photographs of the deceased. Vanessa\u2019s coffin was covered by the mauve and white colours of her childhood club, St Joseph’s Doora Barefield.<\/p>\n
During the service, symbols of the lives of Vanessa, James and Sara were brought forward.<\/p>\n
A blue card and cattle tag symbolised Vanessa\u2019s work as a vet; a hurley represented James\u2019s \u201cdeep love for his club and county\u201d, with the sporting pitch described as his second home; while a cat showed Sara\u2019s fondness for animals.<\/p>\n
The Taoiseach and Tanaiste were represented by their aide-de-camp, while the GAA president, Jarlath Burns, was among the mourners.<\/p>\n
Bishop Nash, a family friend and former priest of Killaloe, said they represented \u201cthe sadness of a nation\u201d at the loss of three people \u201csteeped in the story of the GAA, being laid to rest in the heartland of Clare GAA\u201d.<\/p>\n
Also present was Bishop Ian Ellis, chair of the Board of Governors at Enniskillen Royal School, which James and Sara attended, along with the school\u2019s principal and deputy principal.<\/p>\n
In his homily, Bishop Nash referred to a book by Christy O\u2019Connor, who wrote the history of hurling in the parish.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe spoke about what a great honour it is to wear a county jersey, but when you wear a club jersey, you wear the jersey of those who will carry your coffin,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is sad to realise that that has come true for Vanessa, James and Sara, all too soon and all too sadly.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said so many were \u201cheartbroken at the tragic and unspeakable loss of three lives with so much to give to the world\u201d.<\/p>\n
He told mourners: \u201cThe tragic events of last week, and the ripping away of three people from their family and friends leave us searching for answers and coming back again and again to the only answer that is completely true: \u2018We don\u2019t know\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn that darkness, we remember that in John\u2019s Gospel, Jesus is described as a light that darkness cannot overpower. Truly, we need that light today, and it is hinted at in the bright colours that Vanessa, James and Sara\u2019s family have asked people to wear. The darkness will not conquer.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bishop Nash said Vanessa \u201cbrought immense gifts to her adopted county of Fermanagh, and to her adopted community of Maguiresbridge\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe brought this from her family background in Ballyline, from her school time in Barefield and Col\u00e1iste Mhuire, and from her very first experiences of farming, animals and nature.\u201d<\/p>\n
At great cost, he told mourners, \u201cyou have discovered that many people want to walk with you on your journey of pain.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bishop Nash referred to condolences on the website RIP.ie.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver and over, I could see that women and mothers, as individuals, reached out in their shock and sadness at the loss of a mother and children, but also conscious that there were heartbroken mothers left behind,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe messages highlighted the vulnerability of women to pain inflicted by others and were signs of solidarity in the face of that pain.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bishop Nash referred to the special place the church had played in the lives of the three.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was here in this church that James, Sara and Vanessa received that Sacrament, and it is heartbreakingly sad that their final farewell from life is in this very same church, just a few feet away from the font in which they were baptised,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
