beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Ahead of the service, three hearses had slowly made their way through the village\u2019s main street, which was lined with mourners in style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Agricultural contractor Ian Rutledge (43), who died in hospital on Monday, is the only suspect in the triple murder-suicide probe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Bishop of Ferns Ger Nash, who led the service, referred to the \u201cvulnerability of women to pain inflicted by others\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Mourners, including many from the school and sporting community in Fermanagh, made the journey to Barefield, Vanessa\u2019s native village, for the funeral.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">In a eulogy, her sister Regina said that the three were \u201ctaken from this world in a cruel and vicious manner\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cThere are no words available to express how this has impacted our family and their friends,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cWe as a family have been robbed of both a relationship with our sister and a chance to see James and Sara grow up, and they have been robbed of the At school, the \u201csassy child became a beautiful, loved teen\u201d with \u201ca smile that would light up a room \u2026 she was a normal, happy, 13-year-old teen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Earlier, hundreds of people, many wearing sports jerseys in line with the family\u2019s wish for bright colours, lined the main street as the hearses passed slowly by on their way to the service at the Church of the Immaculate Conception.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The three coffins were placed at the front of the church, side by side, topped with photographs of the deceased. Vanessa\u2019s coffin was covered by the mauve and white colours of her childhood club, St Joseph&#8217;s Doora Barefield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">During the service, symbols of the lives of Vanessa, James and Sara were brought forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">A blue card and cattle tag symbolised Vanessa\u2019s work as a vet; a hurley represented James\u2019s \u201cdeep love for his club and county\u201d, with the sporting pitch described as his second home; while a cat showed Sara\u2019s fondness for animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The Taoiseach and Tanaiste were represented by their aide-de-camp, while the GAA president, Jarlath Burns, was among the mourners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Bishop Nash, a family friend and former priest of Killaloe, said they represented \u201cthe sadness of a nation\u201d at the loss of three people \u201csteeped in the story of the GAA, being laid to rest in the heartland of Clare GAA\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Also present was Bishop Ian Ellis, chair of the Board of Governors at Enniskillen Royal School, which James and Sara attended, along with the school\u2019s principal and deputy principal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">In his homily, Bishop Nash referred to a book by Christy O\u2019Connor, who wrote the history of hurling in the parish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cHe spoke about what a great honour it is to wear a county jersey, but when you wear a club jersey, you wear the jersey of those who will carry your coffin,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cIt is sad to realise that that has come true for Vanessa, James and Sara, all too soon and all too sadly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">He said so many were \u201cheartbroken at the tragic and unspeakable loss of three lives with so much to give to the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">He told mourners: \u201cThe tragic events of last week, and the ripping away of three people from their family and friends leave us searching for answers and coming back again and again to the only answer that is completely true: \u2018We don\u2019t know\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cIn that darkness, we remember that in John\u2019s Gospel, Jesus is described as a light that darkness cannot overpower. Truly, we need that light today, and it is hinted at in the bright colours that Vanessa, James and Sara\u2019s family have asked people to wear. The darkness will not conquer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Bishop Nash said Vanessa \u201cbrought immense gifts to her adopted county of Fermanagh, and to her adopted style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cOver and over, I could see that women and mothers, as individuals, reached out in their shock and sadness at the loss of a mother and children, but also conscious that there were heartbroken mothers left behind,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary beltel-1d70522a_marginbottom5 beltel-1d70522a_margintop0 beltel-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cThe messages highlighted the vulnerability of women to pain inflicted by others and were signs of solidarity in the face of that pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"beltel-ebe0ecc6_root beltel-ebe0ecc6_paragraph beltel-300db776_none beltel-91174671_primary
