It\u2019s absolutely vile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>11:06, 02 Aug 2025Updated 11:09, 02 Aug 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_litter.png\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Discarded litter across graves(Image: GlasgowLive)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A devastated local has slammed vandals who set fire to rubbish in a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/glasgow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"GlasgowLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow<\/a> cemetery \u2014 leaving scorched litter strewn across graves in what she branded a &#8220;cruel and atrocious act&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The woman, who lives near Riddrie Park Cemetery in the city&#8217;s east end, was left horrified after witnessing <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/scottish-fire-and-rescue-service\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"firefightersLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">firefighters<\/a> extinguishing a blaze among the headstones last weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She claims the yobs raided nearby bins for rubbish before setting it alight inside the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/glasgow-city-council\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"council-run graveyard,Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">council-run graveyard,<\/a> leaving burnt debris scattered over loved ones&#8217; final resting places.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Speaking to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowlive.co.uk\/news\/glasgow-news\/vandals-target-glasgow-cemetery-rubbish-32183866\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Glasgow Live,Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow Live,<\/a> the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said: \u201cOn Sunday evening we were walking past the cemetery and saw the fire brigade putting out a blaze. It looked like someone\u2019s rubbish had been set on fire right in the middle of the cemetery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But things took an even more upsetting turn when she spotted mounds of rubbish dumped across several graves, sparking outrage in the local community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She added: \u201cIt\u2019s one of the cruellest, most heartless things you could do \u2014 desecrating graves in a place meant for mourning and peace. It\u2019s absolutely vile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_litter-2.png\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Burnt out rubbish<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Photos taken at the scene show charred waste littered over plots, with the surrounding grass unkempt and overgrown \u2014 something the woman says has become all too common.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She accused Glasgow City Council of letting the cemetery \u201cfall into a state of neglect,\u201d saying: \u201cThe place is a mess \u2014 the grass is rarely cut, there\u2019s dog muck everywhere, and fly-tipping is constant. Now we\u2019ve got fires being lit. It needs protected, not left to rot,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Glasgow City Council confirmed the incident was dealt with after being flagged earlier this week \u2014 though it had not been reported directly to them at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A spokesperson said: &#8220;The recent fly-tipping incident in Riddrie Cemetery was never reported directly to the council. However, staff did attend at the incident on Wednesday this week and dealt with it appropriately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cFly-tipping at any location is unacceptable but dumping rubbish in a cemetery where people go to mourn and remember their loved ones is abhorrent, anti-social behaviour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cOur staff are routinely in the cemetery three times a week and will deal with any issues promptly. Ground maintenance is undertaken regularly over the growing season, including around headstones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Meanwhile, a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: \u201cWe were alerted at 7.40pm to reports of rubbish on fire within Riddrie Park Cemetery.
