United are through to the semi-final<\/p>\n
Manchester United will face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals of the Europa League.<\/p>\n
It’s been a case of Europa League<\/a> or bust for some time for United, with their domestic campaign effectively ended by an FA Cup<\/a> penalty shootout defeat to Fulham in March. They are 14th in the Premier League<\/a> table and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Tottenham in December.<\/p>\n Despite their domestic woes, their form in Europe has offered some encouragement. Ruben Amorim’s<\/a> side are unbeaten in their 12 Europa League outings this season and are through to the semi-finals of the competition after Thursday’s victory over Lyon.<\/p>\n Having drawn 2-2 in the quarter-final first leg in Lyon, United won 5-4 <\/strong>at Old Trafford<\/a> in the return leg to book their place in the last four.<\/p>\n United took the lead early on as Alejandro Garnacho\u2019s excellent play ended in a cut-back for Manuel Ugarte and the Uruguayan made no mistake from close range. Diogo Dalot fired United into a two-goal lead on the stroke of half-time.<\/p>\n Corentin Tolisso pulled a goal back for the visitors to set up a tense finish before Alexandre Lacazette made it 2-2 with 10 minutes to play.<\/p>\n Lyon looked as though they were heading for the semi-finals when they took a 4-2 lead in extra-time. However, goals from Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire completed an astonishing comeback for the Reds, sealing a 5-4 win on the night.<\/p>\n That victory has set up a date with Athletic Bilbao after they beat Rangers 2-0 on aggregate.
