{"id":313718,"date":"2025-08-03T05:20:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-03T05:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/313718\/"},"modified":"2025-08-03T05:20:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-03T05:20:18","slug":"wes-streeting-urged-to-call-tewv-inquiry-after-missing-decision-date","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/313718\/","title":{"rendered":"Wes Streeting urged to call TEWV inquiry after missing decision date"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  After grieving loved ones\u2019 met Wes Streeting in February to call for a public inquiry into the scandal-hit Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys (TEWV) mental health trust, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/24934516.wes-streeting-promises-tewv-public-inquiry-decision-next-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told them they\u2019d finally get a decision by the end of March<\/a> after years of campaigning.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/topics\/wes-streeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Streeting<\/a>, who said they made a \u201cstrong case\u201d for the probe, met with families a second time two days before his self-imposed deadline of March 31, but still no decision was made.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Now four months on, loved ones of patients who died in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/topics\/tees-esk-and-wear-valley-nhs-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TEWV<\/a>\u2019s care are still in the dark, and fear more people will die unless he acts soon.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Last night they called for an update from the Health Secretary, and asked them not to forget their stories, including that of Ty Channce who would have turned 25-years-old today,\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  David Moore, whose daughter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/25008389.2026-date-inquest-emily-moores-death-tewv-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emily<\/a>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/local\/countydurham\/shildon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shildon<\/a>, died under TEWV\u2019s care in 2020, said: \u201cEvery day of delay is vital in my eyes. It\u2019s gone on too long.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Jean Zaremba\u2019s daughter Zoe, from Aiskew in North Yorkshire, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/20070553.zoe-zaremba-inquest-finds-lack-understanding-autism-led-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took her own life after \u201csystemic failings\u201d in her care by TEWV in June 2020<\/a>. (Image: Sarah Caldecott)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Department of Health spokesperson said last night that care &#8220;fell well below the safe, high-quality standards that patients should expect&#8221;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They added they\u00a0are working closely with those affected to prevent lives being lost and to learn from the failures at TEWV, but did not say when\u00a0a decision will be made by.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Northern Echo has been campaigning alongside families to demand a statutory public inquiry, and included it in our election manifesto last year, which was backed by the Labour government.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The families of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/25324839.coroner-hear-christie-harnett-nadia-sharif-tewv-inquests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christie Harnett<\/a>, 17, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/18646212.viktor-scott-browns-suicide-could-avoided\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Viktor Scott-Brown<\/a>, 23, Beth Cunningham, 21, and Jay Jones, 23, sat around the table with Mr Streeting during an emotional meeting in London on February 13, what would have been Christie\u2019s birthday, when he vowed to make a decision on ordering an inquiry by the end of March.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"Families calling for a public inquiry after a meeting with Wes Streeting.\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Families calling for a public inquiry after a meeting with Wes Streeting. (Image: SARAH CALDECOTT) He then met more families in Middlesbrough on March 29 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/25047787.wes-streeting-horrified-experiences-bereaved-tewv-families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told this newspaper after he was \u201creally horrified by the experiences these families have had and continue to have following these appalling failures of care\u201d<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI want to make sure the Government delivers for them,\u201d he added.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Just this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/25350582.jury-finds-flaws-care-stockton-mum-tewv-hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an inquest jury found flaws in the care of Stockton mum Donna Levin before she died in January 2020<\/a>, including poor handovers, incomplete records and a missed observation in the hours before she was found in her hospital room.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"Donna Levin.\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Donna Levin. (Image: FAMILY) The 54-year-old teacher\u2019s family said: \u201cThe findings highlight the need for a public inquiry.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  During the meeting in February Cheryl Allan told Mr Streeting how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/24123274.ty-channce-inquest-tewv-patient-died-suicide-care-failings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failings in her son Ty Channce\u2019s care contributed to his death aged 20 in 2021. (Image: FAMILY) Cheryl told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Echo<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t want him to forget Ty\u2019s, or any of our stories. It would have been Ty\u2019s 25th birthday today.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe are still in limbo.
