A man was rescued from a stretch of canal in Manchester city centre<\/a> in an operation involving police and the fire service.<\/p>\n He was subsequently taken to hospital with a head injury.<\/p>\n Emergency services were called to Tariff Street in the city centre at around 11.30pm on Saturday night. The road runs over a stretch of the Rochdale<\/a> canal near Piccadilly Marina, overlooked by the Dakota Hotel.<\/p>\n Specialist firefighters and rescue units were also scrambled to the scene.<\/p>\n Firefighters used throw lines to reach and rescue the man and he was passed into the care of paramedics.<\/p>\n A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said the rescue operation lasted for around 45 minutes.<\/p>\n The spokesperson said: “At shortly before 11.30pm on Saturday (August 2) two fire engines from Manchester central<\/a> fire station, the water incident unit from Eccles<\/a> fire station plus the enhanced rescue unit from Ashton<\/a> fire station assisted Greater Manchester Police<\/a> with the rescue of one man from a canal off Tariff Street in Manchester city centre.<\/p>\n “Firefighters used throw lines to rescue the man before handing them to the care of north west ambulance service.<\/p>\n “Crews were in attendance for around 45 minutes.”<\/p>\n Never miss a story with the MEN’s daily Catch Up newsletter – get it in your inbox by signing up here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n No further details have been provided and no age for the man has been given.<\/p>\n Greater Manchester Police confirmed the man was taken to hospital, where he’s being treated for a head injury.<\/p>\n The force’s officers were first on the scene and worked with the fire service to rescue him.<\/p>\n A GMP spokesperson confirmed an investigation was underway into the incident to determine how and why he came to be in the canal.<\/p>\n For the latest stories and breaking news visit manchestereveningnews.co.uk<\/a>.
