{"id":314396,"date":"2025-08-03T11:33:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-03T11:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/314396\/"},"modified":"2025-08-03T11:33:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-03T11:33:13","slug":"mysterious-street-art-with-hidden-meaning-appears-in-cardiff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/314396\/","title":{"rendered":"Mysterious street art with hidden meaning appears in Cardiff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                            <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-252474\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/mhorwood_Golley_Slater_020825_10018-scaled-e1754149242438.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\"\/>Chalk artist Julian Beever with his creation<\/p>\n<p>A giant piece of street art has appeared outside Cardiff Central Station, and it\u2019s stopping people in their tracks.<\/p>\n<p>At first glance, the piece is a clever optical illusion, but look a little closer and it\u2019s actually a fascinating window into Welsh history.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioned by Cadw and created by world-renowned chalk artist Julian Beever, the artwork celebrates the newly reopened medieval water-gate passageway which connects the castle\u2019s great hall to the southern lake at Caerphilly \u2013 a historic part of the fortress that\u2019s been hidden from view for centuries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/donorbox.org\/nation-cymru-donations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/NC-banner.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Regeneration project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The artwork is part of a campaign marking the completion of an \u00a38 million regeneration project at Caerphilly Castle, a transformation that\u2019s breathing new life into one of Wales\u2019 most iconic landmarks and tempting visitors to come and explore it for themselves this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the public reaction, artist Julian Beever said: \u201cIt\u2019s been brilliant to see so many people stop, stare, and realise they\u2019re literally standing on history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe water gate has always been there, just beneath people\u2019s feet, so creating a piece of art that opens up the ground felt like the perfect way to reveal something that was hidden in plain sight all along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-252475\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-design-115.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\"  \/>Optical illusion<\/p>\n<p>The water gate is just one of the highlights of Cadw\u2019s major regeneration project at Caerphilly, which also features the castle\u2019s refurbished Great Hall, new accessible visitor facilities, and new interactive exhibits that plunge visitors into the castle\u2019s medieval past.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.llyfrgell.cymru\/ymweld\/pethau-iw-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/4776_NLW_No-Welsh-Art-Digital-Advert_Mar-2025_Land_V2_CY-1-1.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gwilym Hughes, Head of Cadw, said: \u201cThere\u2019s more than one side to history, and more than one way for people to interpret and enjoy it. This magnificent piece of art does just that \u2013 it re-imagines and brings to life a scene at the water gate to help people envision how it may have once looked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBreathing new life into Wales\u2019s heritage isn\u2019t just about restoring old walls, it\u2019s about opening doors to stories old and new, welcoming visitors from near and far, and captivating future generations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaerphilly Castle features plenty of new, interactive exhibits which tell the many stories of the castle and the men, women and children who lived in it over the centuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the summer holidays in full swing, it\u2019s the perfect reason to get out and experience history in a whole new way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The artwork will be in Cardiff Central Square until Monday 4th August before moving to Caerphilly Town Centre until Thursday 7th August.
