{"id":314728,"date":"2025-08-03T14:08:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-03T14:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/314728\/"},"modified":"2025-08-03T14:08:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-03T14:08:15","slug":"eu-lawmakers-walk-out-during-matviyenkos-address-in-geneva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/314728\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Lawmakers Walk Out During Matviyenko\u2019s Address in Geneva"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"188\" data-end=\"375\">A group of European lawmakers walked out in protest during a speech on Wednesday by Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko at the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>Matviyenko, who is under EU and Swiss sanctions,\u00a0was speaking at the morning general debate at the UN office in Geneva when a group of EU lawmakers \u201cdemonstratively left the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1110\" data-end=\"1409\">\u201cI walked out during the speech by Valentina Matviyenko \u2026 because I refuse to be a prop for the lies on which the criminal Kremlin regime is built,\u201d Czech lawmaker Mark\u00e9ta Pekarov\u00e1 Adamov\u00e1, who leads her country\u2019s lower house of parliament, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DMudkOeMd2r\/?hl=en\" title=\"wrote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> on Instagram.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1411\" data-end=\"1661\">German Bundestag President Julia Kl\u00f6ckner also joined the walkout. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundestag.de\/presse\/pressemitteilungen\/2025\/pm-250730-weltkonferenz-1103394\" title=\"statement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, she denounced \u201ccynical attempts to distort history and reverse the roles of perpetrator and victim,\u201d adding that Germany \u201ccontinues to stand firmly on Ukraine\u2019s side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1411\" data-end=\"1661\">The World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva\u00a0runs from July 29 to 31.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tnews<br \/>\n\t\t<a data-id=\"in-article-block\" class=\"related-article__inner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2025\/08\/03\/moldovas-president-accuses-russia-of-planning-unprecedented-election-interference-campaign\" title=\"Moldova\u2019s President Accuses Russia of Planning \u2018Unprecedented\u2019 Election Interference Campaign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tMoldova\u2019s President Accuses Russia of Planning \u2018Unprecedented\u2019 Election Interference Campaign<br \/>\n\t\t\tRead more<br \/>\n\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1411\" data-end=\"1661\">Russian state media <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.ru\/politika\/24623267\" title=\"reported\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that the Russian delegation to the event\u00a0arrived on Sunday and included senior officials such as Deputy State Duma Chairman Pyotr Tolstoy and International Affairs Committee head Leonid Slutsky.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"769\" data-end=\"989\">Swiss media earlier this month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blick.ch\/politik\/ukraine-russland-kommt-es-zu-gespraechen-in-genf-id21056213.html\" title=\"reported\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that Matviyenko and 12 other Russians had been invited to the Inter-Parliamentary Union events in Geneva despite sanctions. Authorities issued special permits to allow their entry.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1899\" data-end=\"2174\">Earlier this week, Matviyenko addressed participants at the conference with a speech outlining the Kremlin\u2019s official position on the war in Ukraine. She <a href=\"https:\/\/ruski.radio.cz\/spiker-cheshskogo-parlamenta-vo-vremya-rechi-matvienko-pokinula-zal-zasedaniy-v-8858404\" title=\"accused\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> Kyiv of \u201cshelling peaceful regions of the Donbas\u201d and killing civilians, saying Russia was \u201cforced to intervene to stop the bloodshed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"2055\">She also accused the West of waging \u201cinformation warfare,\u201d called for the lifting of sanctions and <a href=\"https:\/\/meduza.io\/en\/feature\/2025\/07\/29\/appeasement-of-the-aggressor\" title=\"invited\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invited<\/a> foreign lawmakers to visit the Donbas and the so-called \u201cAlley of Angels\u201d memorial.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"2055\">Ukrainian parliament Deputy Speaker Olena Kondratiuk, who is also attending the conference,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=1080002354281295&amp;id=100068146218289&amp;rdid=q26uOMS4xAM3Nb7G#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a>\u00a0the inclusion of\u00a0Russian officials as\u00a0\u201cappeasement of\u00a0the aggressor\u201d and \u201chypocrisy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"2055\">Ukraine\u2019s Foreign Ministry\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpoxUkraineMFA\/status\/1949864685270098300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a>\u00a0the invitation for\u00a0Matviyenko to attend\u00a0\u201cdisgraceful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Message from The Moscow Times:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dear readers,<\/p>\n<p>We are facing unprecedented challenges.
