A late defeat to Leigh Leopards on Friday night was painful and probably the final nail in the coffin of their top-six aspirations.

Mathematically, they can still easily do it. With seven rounds, they’re only four points behind Wakefield Trinity, who currently hold the final place in the play-offs.

However, the likelihood is much more improbable. It’s almost impossible.

For starters, Warrington’s points difference is 235 points inferior to Wakefield’s. At this stage of the season, that’s an extra league point. So, the Wire will need to win three more games than Daryl Powell’s side.

When you factor in that Wakefield still have Salford Red Devils to play twice, a club that now appears set to lose more of its senior players, and games still to play against Huddersfield and Castleford, it’s reasonable to think Trinity will win at least four of its last seven games.

That would leave Warrington needing to win seven from seven from here and irrespective of who they have to play, there’s been no evidence to suggest this team has that level of consistency in them.

When you factor in that they still have to play the Super League’s top three sides: Hull KR, Wigan Warriors, and the Leopards, it appears that there’s no chance of that happening.

That’s before factoring in that they would also need to overtake Hull FC, who are three points clear of Sam Burgess’ side at this stage too.

Warrington’s season appears to be over, and there’s no sugarcoating it, which means it has been a disastrous campaign.

For the Wire, semi-finalists last year, to drop out of the six entirely is inexplicable to many.

But they have been punished for not strengthening their squad. They signed three players in the off-season. Two are currently out on loan, while the other has played five times for the club. It tells you all that you need to know.

But beyond that, they lost players, too. Matty Nicholson simply wasn’t replaced. Marc Sneyd has done well replacing Josh Drinkwater mid-season, but it’s not been enough.

Injuries haven’t helped. Long-term injuries to Danny Walker, Matty Ashton and George Williams all have to be factored in.

But despite that, having had the best defence in the league last year to now one of the worst, says bigger things are at play.

The Wire won’t make the top six this season.Matt Dufty of Warrington is tackled by Lachlan Lam of…

[4102
4151,79,16,15
0":"post-315099","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-rugby","8":"tag-rugby","9":"tag-sports","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
