{"id":315383,"date":"2025-08-03T20:08:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-03T20:08:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/315383\/"},"modified":"2025-08-03T20:08:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-03T20:08:14","slug":"europe-defense-fund-attracts-bids-for-billions-from-18-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/315383\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe defense fund attracts bids for billions from 18 countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BRUSSELS (AP) \u2014 Eighteen European Union countries have applied for billions of euros from a new defense fund aimed at helping Europe provide for <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-security-rearm-2030-russia-ukraine-7ae33416f3d9aed3cc8a7a7a69e78db8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its own security<\/a>, the bloc\u2019s executive branch said Wednesday, with Poland seeking more than a third of the money.<\/p>\n<p>The Security Action for Europe (SAFE) fund is a 150-billion-euro ($173 billion) program of cheap loans that member countries, Ukraine and outsiders with an EU security agreement, like Britain, can use to buy military equipment together.<\/p>\n<p>The fund was launched after the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nato-us-europeans-ukraine-security-russia-hegseth-d2cd05b5a7bc3d98acbf123179e6b391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump administration signaled<\/a> that Europe is no longer a U.S. security priority. It\u2019s for buying key equipment like air and missile defense systems, artillery, ammunition, drones and \u201cstrategic enablers\u201d like air-to-air refueling.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission said that Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and Spain had applied for money so far.<\/p>\n<p>They have requested at least 127 billion euros ($147 billion) in total, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Polish Defense Minister W\u0142adys\u0142aw Kosiniak-Kamysz said on Tuesday that his government has identified defense projects worth around 45 billion euros ($52 billion), but that the amount it receives will depend on how the commission allocates funds.<\/p>\n<p>Countries using the fund are urged to buy much of their military equipment in Europe, working mostly with European suppliers \u2014 in some cases with EU help to cut prices and speed up orders.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, 15 EU countries were also permitted to use a \u201cnational escape clause\u201d to allow them to spend more on defense without breaking the bloc\u2019s debt rules.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-eu-russia-sabotage-threat-attack-nato-428d488080c17f6c322c9553a301b6dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allies in Europe are convinced<\/a> that President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/vladimir-putin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> could target one of them if Russia wins its war on Ukraine.
