This <strong>heat episode<\/strong> is forecast to begin on <strong>Sunday, 3 August<\/strong>, and may continue until at least <strong>Sunday, 10 August<\/strong>, though earlier forecasts had suggested an improvement by <strong>Thursday, 7 August<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><br style=\"clear: both; display: block; float: none;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Heatwave Characteristics and Meteorological Conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to AEMET, <strong>temperatures will rise sharply on Sunday<\/strong>, particularly in the <strong>southwestern quadrant<\/strong> and <strong>southern Galicia<\/strong>, where <strong>highs of 38\u00b0C and above<\/strong> are likely. In the valleys of the <strong>Guadiana<\/strong>, <strong>Guadalquivir<\/strong>, and <strong>Tagus (Tajo)<\/strong>, <strong>temperatures could reach 40\u201342\u00b0C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This extreme weather event is caused by a <strong>stable synoptic pattern<\/strong>: <strong>high atmospheric pressure over much of the country<\/strong> and <strong>low pressure in the southwest<\/strong>, creating the conditions for a <strong>hot, dry air mass from North Africa<\/strong> to push into the Iberian Peninsula. Combined with strong solar radiation typical of August, these factors will drive temperatures well above seasonal norms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Temperature Outlook Day by Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" alt=\"Weather agency issues special warning for prolonged heatwave across Spain\" class=\"wp-image-14476 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.danews.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/RS699917_FP-calor-07-scr.jpg-2.webp\"  data-\/><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Monday, 4 August<\/strong>: Heat will continue to intensify and extend to the <strong>Cantabrian coast<\/strong>, with widespread highs of around <strong>40\u00b0C<\/strong> in low-lying inland regions. Areas such as <strong>the lower Mi\u00f1o basin<\/strong> could also be affected. In the <strong>Guadiana<\/strong> and <strong>Guadalquivir valleys<\/strong>, <strong>temperatures over 42\u00b0C<\/strong> are again likely.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tuesday, 5 August &amp; Wednesday, 6 August<\/strong>: The <strong>abnormally high temperatures persist<\/strong>, particularly in the <strong>southwest, southeast, northeast<\/strong>, and parts of the <strong>northern plateau<\/strong>. The <strong>Guadalquivir<\/strong> and <strong>Guadiana regions<\/strong> remain at risk of <strong>peaking above 42\u00b0C<\/strong>. A brief <strong>cooling<\/strong> in the <strong>northern peninsula<\/strong> may occur on Tuesday, with a rebound on Wednesday.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thursday, 7 August onwards<\/strong>: Forecasts become less certain. However, it is <strong>likely that heat will intensify in the eastern third of the peninsula<\/strong>. A <strong>brief drop in temperatures<\/strong> is expected in the <strong>Cantabrian region<\/strong> on <strong>Friday<\/strong>, but values are likely to <strong>rise again in the western regions<\/strong>, prolonging the heatwave into <strong>the following weekend<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Areas Most Affected<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Throughout this period, <strong>temperatures exceeding 38\u00b0C<\/strong> are expected across:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>interior of the southern half of the peninsula<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Ebro and northeastern valleys<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>northern plateau<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In some areas, including <strong>the southern part of Galicia<\/strong>, <strong>the eastern Cantabrian coast<\/strong>, and <strong>inland Balearic Islands<\/strong>, <strong>values may also exceed 38\u00b0C<\/strong>. More extreme peaks <strong>above 42\u00b0C<\/strong> are forecast to <strong>widen across the Guadalquivir and Guadiana basins<\/strong>, and may also occur locally in the <strong>Tagus valley<\/strong> and <strong>parts of the Ebro region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hot Nights and Minimum Temperatures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" alt=\"Weather agency issues special warning for prolonged heatwave across Spain\" class=\"wp-image-13449 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/RS700692_sm-calor-103-scr-1.jpg\"  data-\/><\/p>\n<p>While daytime temperatures dominate the alert, <strong>night-time values will also be unusually high<\/strong>, leading to <strong>very warm nights<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Minimum temperatures<\/strong> will <strong>remain above 23\u201325\u00b0C<\/strong> in much of the <strong>centre and south<\/strong>, as well as along the <strong>Mediterranean coast<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>From <strong>Thursday<\/strong>, these <strong>tropical nights<\/strong> may expand into the <strong>Ebro valley<\/strong> and parts of the <strong>southwest<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Canary Islands Outlook<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although <strong>temperatures in the Canary Islands<\/strong> are expected to rise from <strong>Monday, 4 August to Wednesday, 6 August<\/strong>, AEMET <strong>does not anticipate that conditions will meet the official heatwave criteria<\/strong> for the archipelago.<\/p>\n<p>Spain is facing one of its <strong>most significant heat events of the summer<\/strong>, with <strong>prolonged high temperatures<\/strong>, <strong>potentially dangerous heat peaks<\/strong>, and <strong>minimal overnight cooling<\/strong>.
