Juan Ayuso<\/a> crossed the line second
\nat the 80th Circuito de Getxo-Memorial Hermanos Otxoa, just behind UAE Team
\nEmirates \u2013 XRG teammate Isaac del Toro<\/a>, in a confidence-boosting result ahead
\nof the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a. The Spanish rider helped shape the finale on the
\nbrutally steep Pike climb, where he and Del Toro made their winning move. It
\nwas a strong rebound for Ayuso, especially coming off a rough day at the
\nCl\u00e1sica San Sebasti\u00e1n just 24 hours earlier, where he was dropped early and
\nnever found his rhythm. Though a win eluded him, Ayuso looked relieved to be
\nback in the mix.<\/p>\n

“Happy to be able to help the
\nteam and kick off the race on the Pike, a very tough 2km section with gradients
\nof up to 20 percent,” Ayuso told Eurosport, referring to the climb where
\nthe pair launched their decisive attack. “And also happy to finish second
\nbehind Isaac,” he added, showing a bond with his Mexican teammate that
\nhasn\u2019t always been there this summer.<\/p>\n

The young Spaniard had originally
\nbeen expected to take center stage at the Giro d\u2019Italia in May, but a string of
\ncrashes, and even a bee sting to the eye, forced him out in the third week.
\nSince then, he\u2019s been rebuilding toward a new goal: leading his home Grand
\nTour. With Tadej Pogacar sitting out the Vuelta, Ayuso now shares leadership
\nduties with Joao Almeida at UAE.<\/p>\n

“Now we have the Vuelta, to
\nbe able to return after a rather long break following the crash at the Giro and
\nso on,” he said. After a stop-start season, Ayuso is just glad to be back
\non track after a difficult period. He wrapped up his weekend saying he was
\n“happy to have a good feeling,” and made clear his focus: “make
