Time, budget, injury, kids, confidence, motivation. Be honest about the kind of support you actually need \u2014 physically and mentally. That clarity shapes the best starting point for you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">Wood notes it\u2019s crucial to look at what you want your future to look like when figuring out where to start. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMost people want to build or maintain good health and wellbeing habits to enable them to enjoy what they like to do. The majority of people\u2019s goals are often quite straightforward, but people tend to struggle with what good exercise, physical activity, and other lifestyle habits look like and\/or how to progress them over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">Wood adds that people struggle most when it comes to sticking to generic physical activity guidelines long-term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere are many reasons for this, including a lack of appropriate behavioural strategies and a lack of individualisation to suit each individual\u2019s needs,\u201d the clinical exercise physiologist says. <\/p>\n<p>What you\u2019ll actually need<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\"><b>A training plan <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">Before you consider spending hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars on equipment, Wood says you are better off investing in professional individualised exercise advice and some initial demonstration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe key is to develop a sound applied skill-set that is supported by tailored behavioural strategies, including support from friends and family.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<a class=\"ad__link\" data-test-ui=\"ad__link\" href=\"https:\/\/advertising.nzme.co.nz\/\" data-ad-env=\"both\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advertise with NZME.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">He adds that for generally healthy individuals, the plan should include basic fitness principles, but a professional can help you figure out exactly where you are and want to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt should meet you where you\u2019re at, account for your environment, and progress you forward with purpose. Mobility, flow, technique cues \u2014 it all matters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">Meredith agrees, noting that without a plan, \u201cit\u2019s a fast track to overwhelm, underwhelm, or both\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cLife isn\u2019t designed to be plain sailing. Most people don\u2019t quit because they\u2019re lazy. Photo \/ 123rf<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\"><b>Fitness tracker <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">For those looking for cardio-based fitness routines, Wood says most people don\u2019t need any special equipment, but a GPS heart watch or similar can make it more fun and hold you accountable. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSome people are highly motivated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/lifestyle\/i-tried-an-oura-ring-for-a-year-heres-what-i-learnt-about-my-health\/RCAVZTJM3VECRBIUGEFD6XLNL4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/lifestyle\/i-tried-an-oura-ring-for-a-year-heres-what-i-learnt-about-my-health\/RCAVZTJM3VECRBIUGEFD6XLNL4\/\">tracking<\/a> physical metrics and enjoy sharing activities with others via social exercise apps such as Strava,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAs with anything, the investment in equipment for cardio activities often comes down to behavioural factors. It\u2019s helpful (but not always necessary) if you enjoy what you are doing, turn it into a habit, and are motivated enough to sustain the activity over the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\"><b>Weights <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">When it comes to physical equipment, Meredith says she always likes to start with dumbbells. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAdjustable weights are a smart long-term investment for both progression and your wallet. But some of the cheaper dial-up sets can be clunky, chunky, and restrict movement \u2014 or worse, feel unsafe.\u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">Meredith says that both The Warehouse and Kmart have \u201csolid, affordable and adjustable sets\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">She also notes that if you feel a little unsure when it comes to grip, some gloves can help with sweaty hands and improving grip so form and safety don\u2019t suffer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">Wood says that while you could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/lifestyle\/focusing-on-functional-fitness-in-your-20s-and-30s-can-help-you-stay-ready-for-anything-and-many-exercises-can-help-you-achieve-it\/CJER3UJ2WVGONP5FIZI7D6KIFA\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/lifestyle\/focusing-on-functional-fitness-in-your-20s-and-30s-can-help-you-stay-ready-for-anything-and-many-exercises-can-help-you-achieve-it\/CJER3UJ2WVGONP5FIZI7D6KIFA\/\">get into shape<\/a> by using body weight-based exercises (calisthenics), people need to know how to progressively modify calisthenics exercises to provide enough stimulus for adaptation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis is where affordable equipment essentials come into play. While there are a number of options available, it is hard to beat affordable home-based options such as an adjustable weight dumbbell set, or a set of tubing or bands.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">Wood says weights are one of the most versatile and robust pieces of equipment that can be picked up for under $100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYou can easily add more load as you get stronger, and unlike tubing and bands, they last indefinitely, assuming you look after them.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Adjustable weights can be a great investment for beginning weight training. Because you\u2019ve got to know where you\u2019re meant to feel a movement. Bands teach connection. But it\u2019s important to factor in unique needs when choosing a shoe, says Meredith. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cNo two feet are the same \u2014 some need ankle support, others prefer minimal cushioning. What matters is how they perform under pressure for your feet. Do you need stability through the heel and ankle? Shock absorption through the sole?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">And it\u2019s not just the buying that\u2019s important, the trainer says, noting it\u2019s just as important to know when to replace them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYour feet are your foundation \u2014 worn-out shoes can throw everything off, from joint alignment to balance and power output.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"The right shoes should support the foot and body during exercise. Photo \/ 123rf<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\"><b>Activewear<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cGood footwear and attire are important for some modes of exercise,\u201d says Wood, adding that \u201cmost people are looking to get in shape for general health, well-being, and to feel good about themselves, rather than a highly specific goal.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">Meredith says that while you don\u2019t necessarily need specific training clothes to start, we are \u201cdopamine-driven characters\u201d and what we wear can affect how we \u201cshow up\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cStart with a supportive bra that sets your posture \u2014 shoulders back, chest proud.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">She adds that it\u2019s not just the bra that\u2019s there to support your goals, it\u2019s underwear too. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYou\u2019d be shocked how often I get asked about underwear. And fair enough \u2014 one bad pair can ruin an entire workout. Fabric matters &#8211; some are moisture-wicking and fast-drying. Others? They cling, soak, rub. I recommend seamless with grip lining. Because if it doesn\u2019t stay put, it\u2019s going on a journey,&#8221; says the trainer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">For tights and shorts, Meredith says  choose bottoms that suit your shape, not your neighbour\u2019s. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cFor some of us, 7\/8 length is full length.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">And the waistband is important too, she adds, noting \u201cthe right band isn\u2019t about size \u2014 it\u2019s about how it moves &amp; performs to your body composition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">Meredith says  it\u2019s not worth sacrificing your security for on-trend gear &#8211; choose something that makes you feel fantastic and supported. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cChoose fabrics that support you \u2014 not trigger the noise. If it kicks off your insecurity, that lie will grow \u2014 don\u2019t hand it the microphone. Sometimes a thicker fabric doesn\u2019t just hold you in \u2014 it holds your power up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vRHWdcbqYJgzoMPYBB\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAnd don\u2019t hide in black by default.
