Amazon can already hear the strains of John Barry\u2019s iconic theme paired with that gun barrel shot \u2014\u00a0the one to which Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig have all leant their figures. CEO Andy Jassey said on a July 31 call<\/a> (which highlighted his company\u2019s better-than-expected Q3 earning) that \u201cJames Bond<\/a> is in the hands of one of today\u2019s greatest filmmakers,\u201d and adding, \u201cWe cannot wait to get started on 007\u2019s next adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jassey is referring to none other than Denis Villeneuve<\/a>, who was announced in June as the next director to take on the franchise \u2014\u00a0which already has 25 official releases in its canon. Villeneuve will have the unique position of being the first steward to not be collaborating with the Broccoli family, which has overseen every Bond movie since \u201cDr. No\u201d in 1962.<\/p>\n

How exactly Amazon MGM Studios<\/a> will handle Bond has been a subject of debate \u2014 including in a think piece<\/a> from IndieWire\u2019s own Christian Blauvelt \u2014\u00a0but signing on Villeneuve, whose \u201cDune\u201d series and \u201cArrival\u201d earned a bevy of Oscar nominations, seems to indicate a commitment to properly stewarding the next 007 incarnation.<\/p>\n

In June, Villeneuve \u2014\u00a0who will start work on \u201cBond 26\u201d after he finishes up \u201cDune: Messiah\u201d<\/a> \u2014\u00a0described himself as a major Bond-head, releasing the statement: \u201cSome of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since \u2018Dr. No\u2019 with Sean Connery. I\u2019m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he\u2019s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.\u201d<\/p>\n

Major speculation has proliferated online as to whom might take on the iconic role next, with most of that discourse centering around the rumored involvement of Tom Holland<\/a>. \u201cListen, there\u2019s speculation at the minute,\u201d Holland told Gordon Ramsay on the chef\u2019s YouTube series.<\/a> \u201cWe\u2019ll keep it to a minimum for now\u2026 we\u2019ll get there one day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Holland has taken a significant break from on-screen roles in order to recharge. He has not been seen on movie screens since the 2022 release of \u201cUncharted,\u201d and on TV screens since the 2023 Apple TV+ miniseries \u201cThe Crowded Room.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel really blessed to be at a point in my career where I can take time off, reset, and come back ready to go,\u201d he told British GQ.<\/a> \u201cYou can\u2019t be in every movie, and you can\u2019t do your best work when you\u2019re burnt out. What I\u2019ve learnt is that it\u2019s important to set boundaries \u2013 to be mindful about overworking. I\u2019ve got a slightly busy year next year, and then I\u2019ll probably take a bit more time off in 2027. We\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n

Holland has a busy summer 2026 on the way, however, with next July bringing both \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d and \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day,\u201d which he teased on Instagram on August 2.<\/a><\/p>\n
