{"id":315946,"date":"2025-08-04T01:16:23","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T01:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/315946\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T01:16:23","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T01:16:23","slug":"ai-to-continue-providing-court-transcripts-for-rape-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/315946\/","title":{"rendered":"AI to continue providing court transcripts for rape victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Rape victims will be able to access sentencing remarks made by judges to their abusers in court, as ministers consider using artificial intelligence to widen transparency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Shabana Mahmood, the justice secretary, has extended a pilot which allows victims of rape and other serious sexual offences to obtain free copies of sentencing remarks, as she extended the use of AI to civil and family cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Sentencing remarks have been made available to victims of rape since May last year, to allow them to understand why certain outcomes had been reached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/foreign-born-prisoners-in-uk-jails-at-highest-level-since-2013-3pv6t3g7z\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Foreign prisoners in UK jails at highest level since 2013<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">These will now be available on an ongoing basis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">A source close to Mahmood said this had been an issue she had been \u201cpersonally driving\u201d and while there are no current plans to expand AI into crown courts, she was keen to explore how it could be used to support survivors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">AI transcriptions will be rolled out in civil and family courts from Monday, and officials hope it will be able to speed up manual transcripts, create them where none currently exist and improve public access to proceedings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">It is understood that once this is in place, the court system will be able to explore other opportunities, including summarising cases. And I think, let\u2019s see what increased use of AI can deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She said victims want to \u201cfeel like they\u2019re more than just witnesses to their own experience\u201d and that \u201cthey want to feel like their needs are being considered within the criminal justice system\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She said: \u201cI think for many people, what it is, is just understanding the procedures that the court undertook to reach the verdict that they went to, but also the discussion that\u2019s taking place, what evidence is being presented, what the cross examination revealed. If they\u2019re not present, then they don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Olney said that due to the low levels of convictions for rape cases, she would also like to see those cases where a defendant is found not guilty included.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/justice-secretary-to-oppose-abortion-amendments-in-crime-bill-c3zr568r7\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Justice secretary to oppose abortion amendments in crime bill<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She said: \u201cThere are so many people who have these experiences and are brave enough and resolute enough to go through that court process, only to find that their attacker is not found guilty and is not sentenced and goes free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cAnd for those people, more than anything, I feel quite strongly that they do need to have an understanding of the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She added: \u201cI am going to continue pressing for court transcripts, I would very happily accept a less than 100 per cent accurate version of the transcripts, because I don\u2019t think that\u2019s what\u2019s required [for victims].
