{"id":316366,"date":"2025-08-04T05:31:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T05:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/316366\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T05:31:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T05:31:11","slug":"smaller-racetracks-under-pressure-from-rising-costs-and-declining-income-from-media-rights-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/316366\/","title":{"rendered":"Smaller racetracks \u2018under pressure\u2019 from rising costs and declining income from media rights \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The representative body for Ireland\u2019s racecourses has said a combination of declining media rights revenue and rising business costs are putting the country\u2019s smaller tracks under pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Paul Hensey, CEO of the Association of Irish Racecourses, also believes the shock closure of Thurles racecourse may yet represent an opportunity for someone to take over the Co Tipperary track as a racing venture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/racing\/2025\/08\/01\/thurles-racecourse-closed-with-immediate-effect\/\">\u2018A huge blow for Irish racing\u2019 &#8211; Thurles racecourse closure met with shock and sadness<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Friday\u2019s announcement by the Molony family that Ireland\u2019s sole privately owned racecourse was closing with immediate effect caught the sport by surprise including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/horse-racing-ireland-hri\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/horse-racing-ireland-hri\/\">Horse Racing Ireland<\/a> (HRI). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The family statement cited the cost of doing business as a major factor in their decision. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">It was reported at the weekend that Thurles would have needed a multimillion euro investment to comply with new licensing requirements from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-horseracing-regulatory-board\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-horseracing-regulatory-board\/\">Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board<\/a> (IHRB). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">In June, the HRI and IHRB issued minimum requirements for all racecourses to meet including provision for watering systems. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Thurles does not have a watering system and lost three meetings at the end of last year due to ground conditions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Prioritisation of a watering system to ensure ground consistency was also urged by the IHRB in the regulatory body\u2019s investigation following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/racing\/2025\/03\/25\/michael-osullivan-death-attributed-to-inherent-risks-of-racing\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/racing\/2025\/03\/25\/michael-osullivan-death-attributed-to-inherent-risks-of-racing\/\">death of jockey Michael O\u2019Sullivan due to injuries sustained in a fall at Thurles in February<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The Irish Field newspaper reported that an investment of at least E300,000 was needed to install a watering system. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">It also suggested a total redevelopment of the racecourse facility to bring it up to required standards would cost about \u20ac3 million and was a major factor in the Molonys\u2019 decision. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Under HRI capital development fund rules, the Molony family would have to pay three-fifths of any cost. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The runners and riders during a handicap hurdle race at Thurles in November 2021. Photograph: Morgan Treacy\/INPHO <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">HRI boss Suzanne Eade is due to meet the Molony family in the coming week amid widespread calls for the track to be saved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">The Thurles situation has also put the finances of Ireland\u2019s 25 other racecourses under a spotlight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Mr Hensey admitted some tracks are feeling the strain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">\u201cMedia rights have plateaued and are on the decline and that\u2019s certainly had an effect. The cost of doing business is increasing all the time too. There is increased industry demand, increased regulation,\u201d he said on Sunday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Tracks, particularly smaller ones, are not doing as well as they would have in the past. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">\u201cIt\u2019s also worth noting that the media rights and the structure of the current media rights deal is performance based. The first few years of it, there were easing-in provisions built into the deal to get tracks through the first few years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">\u201cAdd the other bits and pieces like licensing requirements and general costs of doing business and it is putting some of the smaller tracks under pressure.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Mr Hensey said he did not know what may emerge from HRI talks with the Molony family, but he said other tracks were watching the situation keenly. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Spectators watch a handicap steeplechase at Thurles in March 2020.
