Whether you&#8217;re after a quick cuppa, a scrumptious cake, or even a board game,<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/liverpool-cafe-hit-zero-star-32183889\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> the city has got you covered.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">While some double up as art galleries, others transform with live music as the sun sets. A quick Google search and you\u2019ll see there are more cafes than you can shake a stick at in Liverpool alone, never mind the wider region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But recently an alarming number of cafes have closed for the final time, citing a variety of reasons. But it isn\u2019t all bad news, and if there was ever a city to power through the current climate, it is Liverpool. Several new businesses have popped up in the area, and longstanding cult-favourites continue to thrive and expand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">With this in mind, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the ECHO <\/a>has taken a look at the region\u2019s caf\u00e9 culture and whether it is at a crisis point, or whether hope remains.<\/p>\n<p>End of an area<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The ECHO recently covered <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/venues-not-choice-message-sudden-31769822\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the story of the Baltic Triangle\u2019s Coffee &amp; Fandisha<\/a>, which was forced to shut its doors after an \u201cexhaustion\u201d situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Brick Street venue, run by Kim, originally from Ethiopia, and Keeley, was once named among the best in the UK. It was a go-to for many in the area, largely thanks to its fresh-baked goods and dedication to Ethiopia\u2019s traditional coffee ceremony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, this is no longer the case, as the brand remains closed due to an \u201congoing legal matter.\u201d In addition to the shuttering of this Baltic Triangle venue, the city saw further caf\u00e9 closures in July.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Hamilton-House-the-former-site-of-Neighbourhood-Cafe-on-Woolton-Road.jpg\" alt=\"Hamilton House, the former site of Neighbourhood Cafe on Woolton Road\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Hamilton House, the former site of Neighbourhood Cafe on Woolton Road(Image: Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It was said that the closure of Neighbourhood Caf\u00e9, a \u201cspecial place filled with memories\u201d located on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/woolton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Woolton<\/a> Road, marked the \u201cend of an era.\u201d Whereas similar devastation was felt, particularly among members of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/wirral\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Wirral<\/a>\u2019s Indian community, when Chaii Coffee, located on Woodchurch in Prenton, shut with \u201cimmediate effect\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A quaint caf\u00e9 nestled among the imposing buildings of the<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/liverpool-city-centre\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> city\u2019s business district<\/a> had a similar fate. A Small Fish in a Big Pond was tucked away on Water Street, behind a little black door and down steps to the lower ground floor level of Oriel Chambers. The caf\u00e9 called this space home for the last seven years but stopped trading on Friday, July 18.<\/p>\n<p>Same old story<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Simon Thompson opened<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/i-wanted-something-bit-more-31616199\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Cafe Baggio<\/a> on School Lane in April. The 41-year-old is no stranger to the industry, having previously owned Present Company in the same space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He decided to close the<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/city-bar-closes-doors-owner-31084193\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> award-winning cocktail bar on New Year\u2019s Eve 2024<\/a> and give the premises a new life a few months later as a football-themed venue. Named after Italian football icon Roberto Baggio, images of legendary players such as Ronaldo Nazario were dotted around the bar, which prided itself on being a place<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/sport\/football\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> \u201cfor football romantics, by football romantics\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_JS369253841.jpg\" alt=\"Cafe Baggio on School Lane owner Simon Thompson.\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Cafe Baggio on School Lane owner Simon Thompson.(Image: Liverpool ECHO)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Staff were encouraged to wear football shirts under their aprons, and scarves and flags from various teams adorned the walls. However, Simon<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> told the ECHO<\/a>, it\u2019s the \u201csame old story\u201d for all hospitality businesses \u201cat this point\u201d, not just cafes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said: \u201cI\u2019m sure everyone has heard it before &#8211; especially in the last few months. Costs and prices aren\u2019t what they once were, and footfall in the area isn\u2019t either. It just meant the business wasn\u2019t really workable anymore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe only opened a few months ago, but I\u2019ve been in that unit for six years with my cocktail bar. It\u2019s unfortunate we are hearing the same story with so many businesses, really.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_JS375140202.jpg\" alt=\"Shutters down on Cafe Baggio in Liverpool city centre\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Shutters down on Cafe Baggio in Liverpool city centre<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I want to see as many<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/uk-restaurant-chain-liverpool-site-32054320\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> hospitality businesses<\/a> thrive as possible, but it&#8217;s a tough environment for everyone at the moment. Costs are rising across the board, and sales in the city centre aren\u2019t as strong as they were a few years ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI hope businesses don\u2019t go in the same direction as Cafe Baggio, but we have seen it a lot recently. It\u2019s a sad time, but I had six great years, making some great friends and memories with wonderful times, so I\u2019m not going to dwell on the sadness of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strength to strength<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, while many venues across the city are closing, others are going from strength to strength. Gareth Dyer, from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/st-helens\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">St Helens<\/a>, and landlord-turned-friend Paul Vernon are two men who know what it takes to thrive in the industry. The pair are best known for being the brains behind two of the city\u2019s<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> most-loved coffee shops.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They welcomed the first customers through the doors of<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/caf-inside-one-liverpool-city-31790821\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Lord Street\u2019s The Rococo Coffee House<\/a> in 2008. Since then, the picturesque venue, located on the top two floors of the corner of Dorans Lane, has made great strides in establishing its loyal customer base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The coffee house&#8217;s success has enabled the two friends to expand with Caf\u00e9 Lucaya, a sister site on Water Street from 2018, and, more recently, Stanhope Coffee, on the<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/man-who-moved-uk-better-32127915\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> street of the same name in the Baltic Triangle.<\/a> Gareth explained how the team believed they weren\u2019t going to be able \u201cto survive\u201d, especially after their initial take-home of \u00a363.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Stanhope-Coffe-opens-on-Stanhope-StreetBaltic-TrianglePic-Andrew-Teebay.jpg\" alt=\"Stanhope Coffe opens with Silvia Glazik(Manager)centre,Colin Harris-Day &amp; Maisie Blake\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Stanhope Coffe opens with Silvia Glazik(Manager)centre,Colin Harris-Day &amp; Maisie Blake(Image: Andrew Teebay Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Fast-forward to today, and the two have continued to defy a difficult industry climate as<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Gareth spoke to the ECHO<\/a> from the brand-new location. However, the 42-year-old isn\u2019t na\u00efve to the current climate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said: \u201cIt\u2019s the most difficult time we have ever come across, if I\u2019m being honest. The pandemic and Covid were hard, but nothing compared to now. The cost pressures the hospitality industry is facing at the moment are really high, particularly with the National Insurance increases and the contribution businesses now need to pay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt is really hitting home hard. Effectively, we are quite a low-paying industry, but the government pushed up the national minimum wage by 10 and 16% but dropped the threshold of national insurance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1_Stanhope-Coffee-opens-on-Stanhope-StreetBaltic-TrianglePic-Andrew-Teebay.jpg\" alt=\"Stanhope Coffee.\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Stanhope Coffee.(Image: Andrew Teebay Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cSo, it has kind of in a way, tripled our contributions as a business. This is all alongside business rates and ever-increasing food costs. Every cost just seems to keep going up and up. We already had the warehouse, an empty space as such. We were already roasting there, but we were already in the process of creating the coffee house before these extra cost pressures came about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt was either we stopped and stopped employing people or we gave it a go because we\u2019ve already got it started. Ultimately, we decided to continue with things because we already had invested; otherwise, it would have been a pure waste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s really fulfilling to see the reaction. Hospitality is really tough, particularly in the environment right now. Chill-O on Renshaw Street has signage up in the space that was occupied by Damas Mediterranean Kitchen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A 10-minute walk from there and Hey Tea, a Chinese-inspired brand that started in a \u201csmall alleyway\u201d is also transforming the unit that previously housed Carphone Warehouse and Ori Caff\u00e8 is now serving a Mediterranean-style menu in Liverpool ONE, with people \u201cbanging on the window\u201d to get in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One family , who have never worked in the industry, told the ECHO just this week that they were \u201ctaking a massive risk\u201d by opening a caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754293703_408_0_JS376613106.jpg\" alt=\"Mum Rachel and dad Nicholas with their two boys, three-year-old Lucian and  and one-year-old Lorenz\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Mum Rachel and dad Nicholas with their two boys, three-year-old Lucian and  and one-year-old Lorenz(Image: Michael Driffill)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Husband and wife Nicholas and Rachel Santangeli, recently opened Lu&amp;Lo Coffee on Liverpool Road North. The couple from<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/maghull\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Maghull<\/a>, are hoping to \u201cfill a void\u201d in the town. What they lack in experience, they make up for in enthusiasm and drive, according to dad Nicholas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Nicholas, a 33-year-old who previously worked as a head of physical development in the army, said his family was prepared to take the risk despite the current situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The former<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/deyes-high-school\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Deyes High School pupil<\/a> said: \u201cWe\u2019ve always had this passion for coffee. We drive to Manchester and Chester just to try new coffee shops. We\u2019ve been together for eight years, and from day one, it has been something we have always done. It\u2019s been crazy since opening. It\u2019s been so busy, which is obviously what we wanted. It\u2019s great to see everyone raving about the place. It\u2019s a big learning curve, but it is paying off and going well so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe were still doing our day jobs, and then in the evenings, doing everything we could in our spare time to get it ready. It\u2019s a massive risk in the current climate, but at the same time, we believe in ourselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s a family-run business, and we are going all in on it.
