{"id":316682,"date":"2025-08-04T08:31:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T08:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/316682\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T08:31:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T08:31:11","slug":"quarter-of-a-million-nhs-scotland-patient-falls-in-5-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/316682\/","title":{"rendered":"Quarter of a million NHS Scotland patient falls in 5 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Labour\u2019s call comes as there were at least 266,573 patient falls between 2019 and 2024, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/freedom-of-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Freedom of Information<\/a> data obtained by the party.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u00a0When incidents in 2025 were included, this number rose to 282,385.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  With nine out of 14 health boards reporting an increase, the figures show that patients are becoming more likely to fall.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Patient falls rose 75 per cent in NHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/local-news\/orkney-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orkney<\/a> &#8211; from 114 incidents in 2019 to 200 in 2024 &#8211; and in hospitals overseen by NHS Dumfries they rose by a third.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The highest amount of falls took place in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/topics\/nhs-greater-glasgow-clyde\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde<\/a> with 71,870 incidents recorded between 2019 and 2025.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The least amount of falls were recorded in NHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/local-news\/shetland-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shetland<\/a> where 466 incidents took place over the same period of time.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Standard hospital guidance recommends avoiding clutter, individual risk assessments and ensuring patients at risk of falling should have a clear route to a toilet.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Just under a quarter of the [[NHS Scotland]] estate was built in the 1960s and 1970s and last year the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/snp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SNP<\/a> froze plans to build new hospitals, treatment centres and surgeries, citing budgetary pressures.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It is estimated it would cost around\u00a0\u00a38.5bn to replace these\u00a0buildings.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The figures also come amidst a backdrop of long waits for care in Scotland as\u00a0one in six Scots are currently on an NHS waiting list.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  READ MORE:\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/25028003.analysis-night-scotlands-troubling-nhs-corridor-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Analysis: A night in Scotland&#8217;s troubling NHS corridor care<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/25333478.nhs-health-board-admits-no-competence-later-abortion-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS health board admits &#8216;no competence&#8217;
