Garten, born in the mid-1940s, grew up in a traditional household defined by rigid gender roles. One of the most striking elements of her memoir is her candid portrayal of childhood in the 1950s, shaped by a volatile father and a somewhat distant mother. Both parents, she writes, were quick to deliver judgment and criticism.

While some members of the book club had childhood experiences that differed from Garten’s, many found resonance in her reflections on family dynamics and societal expectations.

It was her early marriage to Jeffrey, at age 20, that became a turning point. Garten is brutally honest about the challenges their young marriage faced—especially those rooted in outdated gender roles. Still, the group unanimously acknowledged that Jeffrey plays a vital and supportive role in her life. Their enduring bond stands as a testament to love, evolution, and the importance of partnership.

But what truly captivated the club was Ina’s unconventional path to success. She took bold risks, made hard-nosed business decisions, and wasn’t afraid to ruffle feathers along the way. Most importantly, she recognized that boredom was the enemy of happiness—and she embraced change with open arms to ensure her life stayed vibrant and meaningful.

If you’ve seen her on TV or heard her in interviews, you’ll find that the book reads just like her—warm, direct, and full of charm. And if you opt for the audiobook version, you’re in for a treat: Garten narrates it herself.

Looking ahead, the Zebra Book Club has selected Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan for its August read. This powerful novella follows an Irish coal merchant who uncovers the exploitation and abuse of young pregnant girls at a local convent. The story draws inspiration from the real-life history of the Magdalene Laundries, institutions where Irish women were forced into unpaid labor and pressured to give up their children.

Originally published in 2021, Keegan’s book has already been adapted into a film—now available to stream on Hulu and other platforms.

The next Zebra Book Club meeting will be held on Monday, August 28, at a local restaurant (location to be announced).
