Cadent Gas have started gas mains replacement works running through most of August\"EdgeEdge Lane, Thornton(Image: Google)<\/p>\n

A main road in Merseyside is set to close for almost a month, with gas mains replacement works scheduled to start today, Monday, August 4. The works are planned for a section of Edge Lane, Thornton, and will cause traffic delays, according to a notice shared by Sefton<\/a> Council.<\/p>\n

Edge Lane serves the busy junction between Moor Lane and the A565, which is one of the main travel points in and out of Crosby<\/a>. The work will be carried out by Cadent who manage the gas supply in the area and engineers will be removing old pipes and replacing them with new ones. The energy firm said this will help support greener gas supplies in the future.<\/p>\n

Cadent<\/a> also warned customers to expect some disruption to their supply when works start: \u201cWe\u2019ll have to turn off your gas supply during some of our works and may need access to your home, but our teams on site will be on hand to let you know more information.\u201d<\/p>\n

The upgrade has been approved by the head of Highways and Sefton Council who approved a Temporary Road Closure, using the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, Section 14. Furthermore, using the Road Traffic Regulation Act, 1984, the following order is implemented:-<\/p>\n

\u201cNo vehicle shall use the said streets from 00:00 on 28th July 2025 , for a period not exceeding eighteen months or until the works which it is proposed to carry out have been completed, whichever is the earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Below a \u2018road closure\u2019 update on Sefton Council\u2019s Facebook<\/a> page Sunday morning (August 4), the local authority confirmed the schedule of works: \u201cFrom 4th August \u2013 28th August, Edge Lane, Thornton will be temporarily closed for gas mains replacement works between Moor Lane and Ronaldsway.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccess will be maintained for emergency services, and wherever possible for residents. The diversion route will be via Quarry Road, Park View, Brooms Cross Road, Brickwall Lane, Buckley Hill Lane, Edge Lane and vice versa.<\/p>\n

Residents and motorists were quick to comment on the post with some worried about the cumulative effect of other road works in the local vicinity.<\/p>\n

Ann Howard wrote: \u201cIt always seems closed with major road works or just get loads of hold ups, I\u2019ve given up even going down there now I just avoid it altogether.\u201d<\/p>\n

In terms of the gas works, Cadent published an update to the Sefton Council road and street works portal: \u201cHere at Cadent, we look after the gas pipes in your area. We make sure the pipes that bring the gas to your home keep you safe, warm and connected.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re replacing the old pipes with new plastic ones which will mean that you\u2019ll be ready for greener gas in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
