A new pop feud <\/a>may have kicked off as Bobby Brown<\/a> has hit out at Britney Spears<\/a> for her cover of his song My Prerogative.<\/p>\n

Originally released in 1998, the track was a US<\/a> number one hit for Bobby, 56,<\/a> vocalising his feelings after he split from the band New Edition.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s often considered his biggest hit, gaining top 10 positions in several countries, including the UK, and serving as his closing number on tours.<\/p>\n

The song was then covered by Britney, 43<\/a>, in 2004 as the single for her album Greatest Hits: My Prerogative.<\/p>\n

Bobby is not a fan, declaring that she \u2018butchered\u2019 it while speaking to Shannon Sharpe on the Club Shay Shay<\/a> podcast.<\/p>\n

\u2018I don\u2019t think they did it justice,\u2019 he said in response to Shannon asking about cover versions of his hits.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The R&B singer continued: \u2018I don\u2019t think they really did justice to any of the samples that they have done to my songs.\u2019<\/p>\n

Bobby now insists on hearing the full version before approving any sampling from his tracks in case the artist is saying something he doesn\u2019t want to be associated with.<\/p>\n

Taking aim directly at Britney\u2019s version, Bobby added: \u2018Teddy Riley produced it, but that was a butchering that I- I couldn\u2019t take it. <\/p>\n

\u2018I cleared it only because it was Britney Spears and I was thinking\u2026 Teddy Riley is doing it too, so you know.\u2019<\/p>\n

Britney\u2019s version was also an international chart hit, surpassing Bobby\u2019s version in some countries like Italy, Finland, and Ireland.<\/p>\n

She resonated with the track due to her complex relationship with the media and altered some of the lyrics to fit her life.<\/p>\n

It added a sultry intro saying people \u2018can take away everything\u2019 and asking if listeners could \u2018handle\u2019 her truth.<\/p>\n

The lyrics included: \u2018They say I\u2019m nasty, but I don\u2019t give a damn \/ Getting boys is how I live \/ Some ask me questions, why am I so real? \/ But they don\u2019t understand me, or really don\u2019t know the deal \/ About a sista trying hard to make it right.\u2019<\/p>\n

Her new version included synthesisers, drums, and a modern twist on the classic R&B flow.<\/p>\n

It was released the same year she married\u00a0childhood friend\u00a0Jason Allen Alexander, which was annulled after 55 hours.<\/p>\n

Months later, Britney became engaged to dancer\u00a0Kevin Federline, who she would marry and have children with, before divorcing in 2007.<\/p>\n

The media at the time were incredibly outspoken about the whirlwind romance, sparking some of her lyrics in My Prerogative.<\/p>\n

Around the same time, Bobby starred in reality TV show Being Bobby Brown alongside his then-wife Whitney Houston<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By 2006, the late singer had filed for divorce and alleged that he had been abusive during their marriage.<\/a><\/p>\n

The split was finalised the following year, with Houston gaining custody of their then 14-year-old daughter, Bobbi<\/a>.<\/p>\n
