{"id":317839,"date":"2025-08-04T18:43:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T18:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/317839\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T18:43:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T18:43:12","slug":"poland-extends-border-controls-with-germany-lithuania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/317839\/","title":{"rendered":"Poland extends border controls with Germany, Lithuania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<strong>WARSAW &#8211; Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwi\u0144ski announced on Sunday that border controls with Germany and Lithuania will be extended by two months, amid concerns over irregular migration routes shifting through the Baltic region.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nPoland first<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/politics\/news\/poland-reintroduces-border-controls-with-germany-lithuania-in-latest-schengen-blow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> reintroduced border controls<\/a> last month, responding to similar measures on the German side. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has since made lifting the restrictions conditional on a reciprocal move by Berlin.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSpeaking at a briefing with local authorities and services on Sunday, Kierwi\u0144ski said the extension aims to address a key issue: closing off the migration route that, according to Polish authorities, has now shifted to Lithuania and Latvia through Belarus and Russia.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nPoland previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/politics\/news\/poland-suspends-asylum-applications-at-belarus-border-amid-migration-crackdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended<\/a> asylum applications at parts of its border with Belarus, as it accused Minsk and Moscow of deliberately sending migrants over the border to destabilise the country.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cAs you know, these controls were initially introduced for one month, but it won\u2019t come as a big surprise [&#8230;] that we have decided to maintain them for another two months,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nKierwi\u0144ski added that the relevant regulation was issued on Friday and submitted to the European Commission for notification.
