We cannot do what we do without your support.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Poland has decided to extend the controls that it introduced one month ago on its borders with Germany and Lithuania for a further two months. However, countries within Schengen are permitted to reintroduce controls in emergency situations if they are temporary and \u201ca last resort measure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, Germany <a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2023\/09\/23\/germany-plans-controls-on-polish-and-czech-borders-to-curb-migration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced controls on its borders<\/a> with Poland and the Czech Republic in an effort to clamp down on illegal migration. The following year, it extended those measures to all of its borders.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of July, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk <a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2025\/07\/01\/poland-to-reintroduce-border-controls-with-germany-and-lithuania-in-response-to-irregular-migration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that Poland would introduce checks on its own border with Germany. He had been facing <a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2025\/07\/19\/thousands-join-anti-immigration-marches-around-poland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing public pressure and opposition criticism<\/a> over <a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2025\/07\/05\/official-data-show-scale-of-german-migrant-returns-to-poland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany\u2019s policy of sending back to Poland thousands of migrants<\/a> who had tried to enter illegally.<\/p>\n<p>On the night between 6 and 7 July, Poland <a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2025\/07\/07\/poland-reintroduces-controls-on-borders-with-germany-and-lithuania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced controls<\/a> on its borders with both Germany and Lithuania, the latter of which had become a pathway for migrants who irregularly enter Latvia and Lithuania from Belarus before heading westwards through Poland.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kierwi\u0144ski revealed today that, since the measures went into place, almost half a million people have been checked at the borders: around 280,000 coming from Germany and almost 215,000 entering from Lithuania.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking alongside him, Robert Bagan, commander of the Polish border guard, said that 185 foreigners had been denied entry to Poland as a result of the controls \u2013 124 entering from Germany and 61 from Lithuania \u2013 mainly due to not having the requisite documents authorising them to cross.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese controls are clearly yielding results,\u201d said Kierwi\u0144ski. \u201cThese actions are effective and conducted with the full understanding of our European partners\u2026as they also serve the security interests of our neighbours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that a decision on whether to continue the border controls after 4 October would be made in September based on data from the border.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In the first week since restoring controls on its borders with Germany and Lithuania to prevent irregular migration, Poland has checked over 100,000 people seeking to cross, 60 of whom were refused entry <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9maL3bgvmv\">https:\/\/t.co\/9maL3bgvmv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Notes from Poland \ud83c\uddf5\ud83c\uddf1 (@notesfrompoland) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/notesfrompoland\/status\/1944749473684418783?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">July 14, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Deputy interior minister Maciej Duszczyk noted that what has been happening in the region \u201cis not a normal migration crisis\u201d but one engineered \u201cby countries hostile to the European Union\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2024\/06\/12\/the-renewed-poland-belarus-border-crisis-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belarus has been encouraging and assisting<\/a> tens of thousands of migrants \u2013 mainly from the Middle East, Asia and Africa \u2013 to cross into the EU over its borders with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.
