It wasn&#8217;t until 2025 that it finally has a name \u2014 Plesionectes longicollum.<\/p>\n<p>Read More: <a color=\"accent\" class=\"sc-acb0869a-0 bxBBvR sc-be2fc1e4-0 jhHupj\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discovermagazine.com\/the-sciences\/plesiosaur-sheds-light-on-marine-reptile-evolution-during-the-jurassic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plesiosaur Sheds Light on Marine Reptile Evolution During the Jurassic Period<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Well-Preserved Fossil\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plesionectes skeleton at the Staatliches Museum f\u00fcr Naturkunde Stuttgart <\/p>\n<p>(Image Credit:  Staatliches Museum f\u00fcr Naturkunde Stuttgart)<\/p>\n<p>According to a new study in <a href=\"https:\/\/peerj.com\/articles\/19665\/\" class=\"sc-acb0869a-0 bxBBvR sc-be2fc1e4-0 jhHupj\" color=\"accent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paleontology and Evolutionary Science<\/a>, the P. longicollum (meaning long-necked near-swimmer) fossil is nearly complete, offering paleontologists a better look and understanding of the marine ecosystems of that time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The specimen offers not only fossilized bone but also fossilized soft tissues.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0&#8220;This specimen has been in collections for decades, but previous studies never fully explored its distinctive anatomy,&#8221; said Sven Sachs of the Naturkunde-Museum Bielefeld, the study&#8217;s lead author, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1093140?\" class=\"sc-acb0869a-0 bxBBvR sc-be2fc1e4-0 jhHupj\" color=\"accent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>. &#8220;Our detailed examination revealed an unusual combination of skeletal features that clearly distinguish it from all previously known plesiosaurs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oldest Known Plesiosaur in Holzmaden\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Posidonia Shale fossil beds are home to numerous paleontological finds, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0012825223000120#:~:text=Phosphatized%20fossils%20of%20the%20Posidonia,et%20al.%2C%202021)%3B%20and\" class=\"sc-acb0869a-0 bxBBvR sc-be2fc1e4-0 jhHupj\" color=\"accent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ichthyosaur skin<\/a>. The bed is a great place for well-preserved fossils, so it\u2019s no surprise that P. longicollum is so well intact.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the identification of this fossil, researchers now know that the area was even richer in biodiversity than previously realized.
