London has no shortage of green spaces that are ideal for when you want to duck\u00a0heaving crowds of tourists or\u00a0need shade from the intense summer heat. In fact, there are roughly 3,000 to choose from. There are, of course, the sprawling expanses like Hampstead Heath<\/a>\u00a0or Regent\u2019s Park<\/a>, but everyone knows about those. For real peace and\u00a0tranquility in London, head for a little, lesser-known\u00a0garden\u00a0instead.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve got our own list of the capital\u2019s\u00a0best secret gardens<\/a>\u00a0but now, one of them has been named one of the best in\u00a0Europe\u2019s finest urban gardens. The\u00a0Guardian\u00a0has revealed its pick of the \u201810 of the best secret gardens in Europe\u2019s major cities\u2019, and one of them is\u00a0small community\u00a0haven a stone\u2019s throw\u00a0from some of London\u2019s busiest attractions<\/p>\n

What was, just four years ago, a\u00a0neglected patch of concrete in Victoria is now The Onion Garden<\/strong> \u2013 a thriving not-for-profit green\u00a0hub and one of the\u00a0Guardian\u2019s\u00a0best urban gardens in Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tucked away on Seaforth Place in Westminster \u2013 a 10-minute walk from Buckingham Palace \u2013 the space\u00a0was founded by\u00a0\u2018chief onion\u2019 Jens Jakobsen in 2021.\u00a0True to the name, it\u2019s home to a\u00a0bountiful population of onions, some growing from the soil, some hung from branches and some used to create installations.\u00a0Complete with a greenhouse and cosy pavilion cafe, it\u00a0 also regularly hosts local choir performances, craft workshops, gardening classes and art exhibitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Guardian\u00a0said: \u2018According to the tour guide Jack Chesher, it was a \u201cderelict concrete corner\u201d until late 2021, when it began to be transformed into the \u201changing gardens of Westminster\u201d. The pocket park now has more than 200 species of plant \u2013 including a fair few onions \u2013 and displays artworks such as mosaic wall art and sculptures.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Onion Garden is open on weekdays from 7.30am to 5.30pm (until 10pm on Thursdays) and from\u00a08.30am-4.30pm on weekends.\u00a0<\/p>\n
