{"id":318817,"date":"2025-08-05T03:45:28","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T03:45:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/318817\/"},"modified":"2025-08-05T03:45:28","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T03:45:28","slug":"denmark-arrests-a-man-wanted-in-germany-for-allegedly-gathering-information-on-jews-for-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/318817\/","title":{"rendered":"Denmark arrests a man wanted in Germany for allegedly gathering information on Jews for Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BERLIN (AP) \u2014 A man suspected of gathering information on Jewish locations and individuals in Berlin for Iranian intelligence, possibly with a view to attacks, has been arrested in Denmark, German prosecutors said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Danish national, identified only as Ali S. in line with German privacy rules, was arrested on Thursday in the Danish city of Aarhus, federal prosecutors said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The man was tasked by an Iranian intelligence service early this year with gathering information on \u201cJewish localities and specific Jewish individuals\u201d in Berlin, prosecutors said. They didn\u2019t elaborate.<\/p>\n<p>He spied on three properties in June, \u201cpresumably in preparation of further intelligence activities in Germany, possibly including terrorist attacks on Jewish targets,\u201d prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig said that \u201cif this suspicion is confirmed, we are dealing with an outrageous operation,\u201d adding in a statement that \u201cthe protection of Jewish life has the highest priority for the German government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>German security authorities stepped up protection for Jewish and Israeli facilities after a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-attack-iran-strike-nuclear-us-news-5adea3ffa51264e0c7c803d8acfde338\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12-day war<\/a> broke out between Israel and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iran<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect is accused of working for an intelligence service of a foreign power. The information leading to his arrest came from Germany\u2019s domestic intelligence service, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>He will be brought before a judge in Germany to determine whether he\u2019s kept in custody pending formal charges after extradition from Denmark. It wasn\u2019t immediately clear when that will happen.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Ambassador Majid Nili Ahmadabadi was summoned to the German Foreign Ministry after prosecutors announced the arrest.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian Embassy in Berlin rejected what it called \u201cunfounded and dangerous allegations\u201d of an apparent plan for an attack on Jewish facilities. It said in an emailed statement that they \u201cappear to be part of a deliberate campaign\u201d to divert attention from \u201cthe recent aggression of the Israeli regime against Iranian territory\u201d and the killing of Iranians. <\/p>\n<p>Germany is a staunch ally of Israel and has a history of tense relations with Tehran, though it has been one of the three leading European powers trying to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-nuclear-geneva-talks-europe-israel-0c9b3dff338f279c85d94885cb1b51b8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">engage Iran in diplomacy<\/a> over its nuclear program. <\/p>\n<p>In October, Germany <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-iran-consulates-closed-execution-jamshid-sharmahd-b724c4915cd620a33b5bd00b26387200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ordered the closure<\/a> of all three Iranian Consulates in the country in response to the Iranian judiciary\u2019s announcement of the execution of Iranian German prisoner <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-sharmahd-execution-acb36064d51847f7e46c6886585e8bba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jamshid Sharmahd<\/a>, who lived in the United States and was kidnapped in Dubai in 2020 by Iranian security forces.
