{"id":319508,"date":"2025-08-05T09:53:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T09:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/319508\/"},"modified":"2025-08-05T09:53:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T09:53:09","slug":"eu-seeks-ambitious-agreement-to-tackle-plastic-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/319508\/","title":{"rendered":"EU seeks ambitious agreement to tackle plastic pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commission is participating in crucial negotiations on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/inc-plastic-pollution\/session-5.2\" class=\"ecl-link ecl-link--icon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Plastics Treaty (INC-5.2)\u00a0<\/a>in Geneva, Switzerland, with the aim of reaching a <strong>comprehensive and effective agreement to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/report\/drowning-plastics-marine-litter-and-plastic-waste-vital-graphics\" class=\"ecl-link ecl-link--icon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNEP data from 2021<\/a>, global plastic production has reached a staggering <strong>400 million tons per year<\/strong>.<strong> <\/strong>However, <strong>only 12% is incinerated,<\/strong> and <strong>only 9% is recycled<\/strong>, leaving a substantial amount of plastic waste to contaminate the environment, including oceans and rivers.<\/p>\n<p>Because of these alarming statistics, the EU is advocating for a <strong>treaty that addresses the entire life cycle of plastics<\/strong>, from production to disposal, and includes measures to phase out certain plastic products that pose a significant risk to human health and the environment. The EU will also continue advocating for effective provisions on the environmentally sound management of plastic waste.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner for the Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, <strong>Jessika Roswall,<\/strong> will attend the Ministerial Segment of the negotiations on 12 August, where she will emphasise the need for global cooperation to curb plastic pollution.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf business as usual continues, plastic production will triple by 2060. The EU remains firmly committed to finding a global solution to curb plastic pollution and we expect all sides to be flexible and open in the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0need to agree on effective global policies benefitting both people and the planet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The negotiations, which run <strong>until August 14<\/strong>, follow a previous session in December 2024 that made significant progress towards a deal but ultimately failed to reach an agreement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 5th session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on the\u202fGlobal Plastics Treaty (INC-5)\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/news\/eu-regrets-inconclusive-global-plastics-treaty-2024-12-02_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finished without a deal<\/a> in December 2024 in Busan, South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Even though no agreement was reached, the negotiating committee made significant progress towards a deal by agreeing on a text that should serve as a basis for negotiations at the resumed meeting in Geneva (INC-5.2).<\/p>\n<p>The exponential growth of production and consumption of plastics in recent decades is having serious negative effects on the environment and human health.<\/p>\n<p>To mobilise support for an ambitious agreement, the EU is actively involved in the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/hactoendplasticpollution.org\/\" class=\"ecl-link ecl-link--icon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution<\/a>, which includes 70 countries committed to aiming high in the negotiations to end plastic pollution by 2040.\u202f<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The European Commission is participating in crucial negotiations on the Global Plastics Treaty (INC-5.2)\u00a0in Geneva, Switzerland, with the&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":319509,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5174],"tags":[5284,2000,299,5187,106259,14193,10687],"class_list":{"0":"post-319508","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-eu","8":"tag-circular-economy","9":"tag-eu","10":"tag-europe","11":"tag-european","12":"tag-international-cooperation","13":"tag-plastic-waste","14":"tag-plastics"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114975552576980079","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/319508","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=319508"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/319508\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/319509"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=319508"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=319508"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=319508"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
