He did math problems and some reading, underscoring how much he\u2019s accomplished at his school for children with autism.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00033b6njn0bks0x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Richards has heard Trump administration officials suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BNeIZkacWkk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food dyes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZofNzZ8UoPk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pediatric vaccines<\/a> cause autism and ADHD. That stance, she said, unfairly blames parents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00043b6nls9dynai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s no evidence to support it,\u201d said Richards, 44, a marketing director in Richmond, Virginia. \u201cAs a parent, it\u2019s infuriating.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00053b6n5mfe1sgj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In their zeal to \u201cMake America Healthy Again,\u201d Trump administration officials are making statements that some advocacy and medical groups say depict patients and the doctors who treat them as partly responsible for whatever ails them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00063b6n8c6ob6aa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and agency leaders have attributed a panoply of chronic diseases and other medical issues \u2014 such as autism, attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder, depression, diabetes, and obesity \u2014 to consumers and their lifestyle choices, according to a review of 15 hours of recorded interviews, social media statements, and federal reports.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00073b6nv6cshst0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He said at a news conference on April 16 that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/article\/2025\/apr\/24\/RFK-jr-environmental-toxins-causing-autism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autism is preventable<\/a> and that rates are rising because of toxic substances in the environment, despite a lack of evidence there is any link.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00083b6nfjdg94he@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese are kids who will never pay taxes. They\u2019ll never hold a job. They\u2019ll never play baseball. They\u2019ll never write a poem. They\u2019ll never go out on a date,\u201d he said. \u201cMany of them will never use a toilet unassisted.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00093b6nrv96s90x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The vast majority of people on the spectrum do not have those severe challenges.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000a3b6n8w81p8bt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The statements are more than rhetoric. These attitudes, ranging from judgments about individual behaviors to criticism of the chronically poor, are shaping policies that affect millions of people. The sentiments have been a factor behind decisions to cut Medicaid, keep federal insurance programs from covering anti-obesity drugs, and impose new barriers to covid vaccines for healthy people, say public health leaders and doctors. GOP lawmakers and federal health officials, they say, hold a reproachful stance toward chronic illnesses and the estimated 129 million people in the U.S. affected by them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000b3b6n70hqonjt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is at the heart of so much of our national problem with health,\u201d said Robert Califf, who led the Food and Drug Administration during the Obama and Biden administrations. \u201cIt\u2019s these two extreme views. It\u2019s every health decision is up to the \u2018rugged individual,\u2019 versus the other extreme view that it\u2019s all controlled by environment and social determinants of health. The truth is, it\u2019s on a continuum.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000f3b6ni01ltnnr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Self-reliance is a common theme among adherents of MAHA, an informal movement for which Kennedy has fashioned himself the figurehead that promotes medical freedom, skepticism of vaccines, and a focus on nontraditional medicine to treat disease.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000g3b6n206g16k5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Taking medication to manage diabetes? FDA Commissioner Marty Makary suggested on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/robert-f-kennedy-jrs-fda-commissioner-marty-makarty-suggests-diabetics-get-cooking-classes-over-insulin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a> in late May that it would be effective to \u201ctreat more diabetes with cooking classes\u201d instead of \u201cjust throwing insulin at people.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000h3b6nk3xgbjsa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People with Type 1 diabetes must take insulin because their pancreases don\u2019t produce it, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/diabetes\/overview\/insulin-medicines-treatments#:~:text=If%20you%20have%20type%201,another%20option%20for%20some%20people.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>, which also notes that many with Type 2 diabetes \u201cneed to take diabetes medicines as well.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000i3b6n4fjtxsdt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Taking birth control pills? Casey Means, President Donald Trump\u2019s nominee to be U.S. surgeon general, has said that\u2019s a \u201cdisrespect of life\u201d for short-term gain and efficiency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000j3b6nr20z3okq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are prescribing them like candy,\u201d she said last year on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mUH4Co2wE-I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Tucker Carlson Show<\/a>,\u201d adding that birth control medications \u201care literally shutting down the hormones in the female body that create this cyclical, life-giving nature of women.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000k3b6nwa0ev23x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Have a child on ADHD meds? <a href=\"https:\/\/calleymeans.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Calley Means<\/a>, who is an adviser to Kennedy and is Casey Means\u2019 brother, said on the same show that Adderall is prescribed as the standard of care when children get a little fidgety because they\u2019re in sedentary environments with limited sunlight and eat too much ultraprocessed food.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000l3b6njh09vofz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As a society, he said, \u201cwe\u2019re really committing mass child abuse in many ways, and we\u2019re normalizing that and we\u2019re not speaking out about that. And then we\u2019re giving people stimulants developed by Nazi Germany.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000m3b6nsm6zwmpd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Calley Means was probably referring to Pervitin, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/international\/the-nazi-death-machine-hitler-s-drugged-soldiers-a-354606.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">methamphetamine-based<\/a> drug administered to Adolf Hitler\u2019s forces in World War II. Adderall is a prescription drug containing amphetamine, a stimulant that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/adhd\/how-do-adderall-and-meth-methamphetamine-differ#differences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not the same<\/a> as methamphetamine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000n3b6nukbpth24@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Department of Health and Human Services didn\u2019t respond to messages seeking comment from Means.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000o3b6ntnfz9p8w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some conservatives and MAHA adherents argue that people need to take more responsibility for their health. But comments that shift blame to patients and physicians risk perpetuating stigmas, fostering the spread of misinformation, and eroding trust in modern medicine, say medical groups, doctors, and patient advocacy groups.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000p3b6ntec5vz0e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The statements assume consumers and patients have control over improving their health and preventing chronic disease when the reality is more complex, according to some public health leaders. Lower-income people, they say, often lack access to grocery stores and healthy food, may juggle too many jobs to have time to cook from scratch, and may live in dangerous areas where it\u2019s harder to get outside and exercise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000q3b6nrcc9g1er@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/events.uschamberfoundation.org\/surgeongeneral\/680209\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jerome Adams<\/a>, surgeon general during the previous Trump administration, told KFF Health News that he worries efforts to promote health will be undone by \u201cthe return of vaccine-preventable diseases, increasing mistrust in the health care system, and the tearing down of social supports which are critical for making healthy choices.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000s3b6nl4lldzg4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The attitudes held by top Trump health officials have affected policy decisions, some doctors and public health leaders say.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000t3b6ndes36vhp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kennedy and other Trump administration health leaders have been especially outspoken, targeting issues they consider especially egregious in recent federal actions, research, or policy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000u3b6ndk9ghk0j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, the Biden administration proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/biden-harris-administration-announces-medicare-advantage-and-medicare-part-d-prescription-drug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a rule<\/a> in November that would let Medicare cover weight loss medications such as Wegovy and Zepbound. But Kennedy and other political appointees at HHS and its agencies have criticized the drugs and the people who take them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000v3b6nory73jyl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think it\u2019s very dark,\u201d Calley Means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mUH4Co2wE-I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Carlson<\/a>, referring to the weight loss drugs. \u201cI think it\u2019s a stranglehold on the U.S. population, almost like solidifying this idea that there is a magic pill.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000w3b6njy709twg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He added: \u201cWhere is the urgency on saying \u2018Hey parents, maybe we shouldn\u2019t feed our kids toxic food?\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000x3b6nn0hn2s1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kennedy, too, has criticized the medications and people who use them, saying in October on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/robertfkennedyjr\/reel\/DBWPFf4PmFV\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a> that drugmakers \u201care counting on selling it to Americans because we\u2019re so stupid and so addicted to drugs.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000y3b6nt65rymnh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In April, the Trump administration announced it would not finalize the Biden-era coverage rule.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm000z3b6nt41d9x81@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s impacting the kind of care and treatments patients will have,\u201d said Andrea Love, a biomedical scientist and founder of ImmunoLogic, a science communication organization. \u201cIt sends the message that it\u2019s your fault. It\u2019s very much victim-blaming. It creates the idea that scientific progress is the devil, demonizes things that aren\u2019t individually harming health, while avoiding addressing systemic issues that play a much larger role in health.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00103b6nsktwd1r8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kennedy and HHS didn\u2019t return messages seeking comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00113b6nz7clvrln@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Data shows that the medications are effective. People who took the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/zepbound-explained-glp-1-weight-loss-drug-fda-approval#:~:text=The%20FDA%20approval%20of%20Zepbound,25%25%20of%20their%20body%20weight.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highest dose of Zepbound<\/a> in clinical trials lost an average of 48 pounds, and 1 in 3 on that dose lost more than 58 pounds, or 25% of their body weight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00123b6nngdx3ddg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kennedy and other agency leaders also oppose many covid-era health restrictions and rules. Some physicians and public health leaders note these officials downplayed covid risks while criticizing vaccines developed during the previous Trump administration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00133b6n9obnr6si@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kennedy has said that people who died from covid actually fell victim to chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, or asthma.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00143b6naznzxl67@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat\u2019s really what killed them,\u201d Kennedy said on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZofNzZ8UoPk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Phil Primetime<\/a>\u201d in April. \u201cThese were people who were so sick they were basically hanging from a cliff, and covid came along and stamped on their fingers and dropped them off. But they were already living lives that were burdened by sickness.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00153b6ncestru6s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Covid was the underlying cause of death for more than <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2800816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">940,000 people<\/a> in the U.S. from Aug. 1, 2021, to July 31, 2022, according to a 2023 report in JAMA Network, an open-access journal on biomedical sciences published by the American Medical Association.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdxi9ngm00163b6n8k0n4ht6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Covid ranked first among deaths caused by infectious or respiratory diseases for youths under age 19, based on the report.
