{"id":31991,"date":"2025-04-19T04:18:09","date_gmt":"2025-04-19T04:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/31991\/"},"modified":"2025-04-19T04:18:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-19T04:18:09","slug":"nasas-perseverance-rover-is-investigating-a-mysterious-dark-stone-of-uncertain-origin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/31991\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA\u2019s Perseverance Rover Is Investigating a Mysterious Dark Stone of &#8220;Uncertain&#8221; Origin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/mars-perseverance-rover-reveals-key-discoveries\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Perseverance rover<\/a> has made a mysterious <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/new-and-intriguing-mars-discoveries-made-by-nasas-perseverance-rover-are-all-we-had-hoped-for-and-more\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discovery<\/a> during its exploration of Jezero Crater: a dark-colored stone with unusual features that \u201cmay have originated from elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unexpected <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blog\/origins-uncertain-skull-hill-rock\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discovery<\/a>, which the Perseverance team has dubbed \u201cSkull Hill,\u201d was made last week while the intrepid rover continued its descent down the lower part of Witch Hazel Hill along the crater\u2019s rim.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At one point, the rover stopped at the boundary between a pair of distinct <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/nasas-perseverance-rover-makes-unprecedented-discovery-of-bizarre-freya-castle-rock-on-mars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rock<\/a> outcrops of contrasting coloration that were first revealed in orbital imagery of the crater. The intriguing location, which the Perseverance team had nicknamed \u201cPort Anson,\u201d appears to be a geological \u201ccontact\u201d area featuring several intriguing <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/first-rocks-sampled-by-mars-perseverance-rover-dramatically-improve-chances-for-life\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">angular rocks<\/a>, some of which are believed to have originated someplace other than their current resting place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such \u201cfloat\u201d rocks, as scientists call these out-of-place stones, are not uncommon on the Red Planet. However, even in an area rich with such features, Skull Hill stands out as a curious sample of stone that has left NASA\u2019s scientific team with many questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Closer Look at \u201cSkull Hill\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dark-toned rock formation possessing a rugged, angular surface and several unusual pit-like markings, Skull Hill was discovered on April 11 by the rover\u2019s Mastcam-Z instrument. The curious looking stone contrasts sharply against the lighter terrain surrounding it, primarily due to its chalky grey color and unusual pits, which the Perseverance team believes are likely the result of wind erosion over long periods.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34425 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Skull-Hill.jpg\" alt=\"Skull Hill\" width=\"600\" height=\"465\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/465;\"\/>The unusual stone dubbed \u201cSkull Hill,\u201d which was discovered by NASA\u2019s Perseverance rover on April 11, 2025 (Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/ASU)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another reason for the rock\u2019s strange, pitted appearance could involve the presence of clasts that were once embedded in it, which weathered away over time. Although Skull Hill is certainly an outlier among the local surrounding Martian rock samples, similar dark-colored float rocks have been discovered in the Port Anson area in the past.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ongoing investigation into these unusual stones could help to determine not only their origins, but also the transport mechanisms behind their movement from their original location on the Red Planet\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, adding to the mystery is another intriguing possibility the Perseverance team considered: that Skull Hill might not originate from anywhere on Mars at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meteorite or Magmatic Mystery?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the stone\u2019s dark coloration and unusual shape, one possibility that was initially considered had been that Skull Hill might be a fragment from a meteorite that made its way to the Martian surface.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the stone\u2019s appearance does superficially resemble a meteorite, chemical analysis of the sample made possible by Perseverance\u2019s SuperCam instrument indicates a composition that likely rules out a meteorite origin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if not a meteorite, then what could account for Skull Hill\u2019s unusual appearance?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best explanation so far seems to be that the mysterious stone is an igneous rock, which likely formed as molten lava or magma cooled long ago in the Red Planet\u2019s history. Such volcanic stones are common both on Mars, and on Earth, and contain an abundance of elements like iron and magnesium which would contribute to their dark color.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/could-the-equivalence-principle-be-wrong-new-measurements-put-einsteins-theory-of-relativity-to-the-test\/\" class=\"mask-img\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Earthrise-120x120.jpg\" class=\"attachment-codetipi-15zine-120-120 size-codetipi-15zine-120-120 wp-post-image lazyload\" alt=\"equivalence principle\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 120px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 120\/120;\"\/>\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other minerals such as olivine, pyroxene, amphibole, and biotite\u2014all of which are frequently found in igneous rocks\u2014might also be present in Skull Hill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further investigations by Perseverance will likely help to shed additional light on the mystery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLuckily for us, the rover has instruments that can measure the chemical composition of rocks on Mars,\u201d said Margaret Deahn, Ph.D., a student at Purdue University who wrote about the recent discovery <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blog\/origins-uncertain-skull-hill-rock\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a blog post<\/a> at NASA\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnderstanding the composition of these darker-toned floats will help the team to interpret the origin of this unique rock,\u201d Deahn added.
