{"id":320053,"date":"2025-08-05T14:42:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T14:42:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/320053\/"},"modified":"2025-08-05T14:42:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T14:42:17","slug":"tour-de-france-femmes-winner-pauline-ferrand-prevot-earned-10-times-less-prize-money-than-tadej-pogacar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/320053\/","title":{"rendered":"Tour de France Femmes winner Pauline Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot earned 10 times less prize money\u00a0than Tadej Poga\u010dar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With Pauline Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot winning the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, Visma-Lease a Bike took home the most prize money from the fourth edition of the race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Olympic mountain bike champion\u2019s yellow jersey and two stage wins, plus a third stage win from teammate Marianne Vos and other miscellaneous prizes, saw the team take home \u20ac76,190.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But while that might seem like a big chunk of money, there is a large discrepancy between the winnings at the women\u2019s race compared to those at the men\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>10 times the winnings\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2226645808.jpg\" alt=\"Tadej Pogacar celebrates on the podium with the overall leader's yellow jersey after the 21st and final stage of the 112th edition of the Tour de France cycling race.\" class=\"wp-image-933386\"\/>Tadej Poga\u010dar claimed \u20ac600,000 in prize money at the 2025 Tour de France. Marco Bertorello \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot, the first French winner of the grand tour since Bernard Hinault in 1985, earned \u20ac50,000 for her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tour-de-france-jersey-colours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maillot jaune<\/a>. Tadej Poga\u010dar won \u20ac500,000 \u2013 10 times Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot\u2019s prize \u2013 for his victory at the 2025 Tour de France.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Slovenian also earned an extra \u20ac100,000 through other prizes, including his four stage wins, taking his total winnings to \u20ac600,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/events\/tour-de-france-femmes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift<\/a> and the Giro d\u2019Italia Women pay the largest prizes in women\u2019s cycling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Race organisers ASO paid out a total of \u20ac259,430 at this year\u2019s Tour de France Femmes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For comparison, the 2025 men\u2019s Tour de France had a total prize purse of \u20ac2,578,000, which is also close to 10 times the amount for the women\u2019s race.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Behind Team Visma\u2013Lease a Bike and Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot\u2019s winnings, FDJ-Suez won \u20ac53,810, while UAE Team ADQ bagged \u20ac25,630, thanks in part to Maeva Squiban\u2019s back-to-back stage wins.<\/p>\n<p>Five teams, including Uno-X Mobility, won less than \u20ac500 at this year\u2019s Tour de France Femmes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s cycling was \u201cnon-existent\u201d\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2226565032.jpg\" alt=\"Tour de France Femmes director Marion Rousse.\" class=\"wp-image-933384\"\/>Tour de France Femmes race director Marion Rousse: \u201cWe have to realise that women&#8217;s cycling, even four years ago, was non-existent.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>One person who has tried to put the women\u2019s prize money question into context is Marion Rousse.<\/p>\n<p>A former professional cyclist and French champion, Rousse has been director of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift since its return in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Caught on microphone by Clapping media, and reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhnet.be\/sports\/cyclisme\/tour-de-france\/2025\/07\/29\/tour-de-france-50000-pour-les-femmes-500000-pour-les-hommes-il-faut-comparer-ce-qui-est-comparable-repond-marion-rousse-video-IPCQVHXJLBCBTL5NQRYXBWMB3A\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">DH Les Sports<\/a>, Rousse said: \u201cWe have to realise that women&#8217;s cycling, even four years ago, was non-existent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She was also keen to reframe the comparison between the men\u2019s and women\u2019s Tours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took the Tour de France men&#8217;s race, which lasts three weeks, and the Tour de France Femmes with Zwift, which lasts nine days of racing. Julien de Rosa \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Rousse also commented on how women\u2019s racing has changed compared to a few years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no salary. The girls were professionals, but they had to go to work in the afternoon to earn a salary,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Rousse added that the increased media coverage has helped bring in sponsors and, therefore, a minimum wage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is something Zwift highlighted in its Tour de France Femmes report before the 2025 edition of the race got underway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years, women\u2019s cycling lacked the investment, media coverage, and exposure it deserved,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/zwift-highlights-impact-of-tour-de-france-femmes-avec-zwift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2022 this changed with the introduction of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. With the much increased visibility brought to the sport by this race, it has done more than make history. It has transformed the future of the sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/601097-20240814_1537-TdFFaZ-Stage04-LeonvanBon-114A3496-c9244c-original-1752500163.jpg\" alt=\"Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift stage 4.\" class=\"wp-image-930683\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/>A Zwift report highlighted how this is a \u201cgolden age\u201d for women\u2019s cycling. Leon van Bon \/ Zwift<\/p>\n<p>The report, which claimed this is a \u201cgolden age\u201d for women\u2019s cycling, highlighted how 85 per cent of people consider professional cycling as a viable profession, thanks in part to minimum salary requirements.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2020, the minimum salary stood at \u20ac15,000 but has increased to \u20ac31,768 in 2025, for new riders who are team employees. 2025 also saw the introduction of a ProTeam category with a minimum rider salary of \u20ac20,000, which is set to increase to \u20ac24,000 by 2027,\u201d the report noted.<\/p>\n<p>The Cycling Alliance also reports that by 2024, the average salary had risen to \u20ac40,000, with 15 per cent of those surveyed earning over \u20ac100,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s WorldTour team budgets have risen to an average of \u20ac4.67m, a significant increase from the 2022 average of \u20ac2.35m. But this lags far behind the men\u2019s WorldTour team budgets.
