{"id":320369,"date":"2025-08-05T17:32:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T17:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/320369\/"},"modified":"2025-08-05T17:32:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T17:32:17","slug":"i-couldnt-stand-depressing-scottish-winters-now-i-live-in-a-tuscan-villa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/320369\/","title":{"rendered":"I couldn&#8217;t stand depressing Scottish winters \u2013 now I live in a Tuscan villa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tKate Orson says she moved abroad from Glasgow to avoid Scotland\u2019s \u2018dark and depressing\u2019 winters\u00a0\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p>A <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/brits-abroad?srsltid=AfmBOorVPrM0M0zsZo3a37kRX1GL86tfx5Tmp9GqBZd-_iJ6GV324yWv&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">British expat<\/a> in <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/italy?srsltid=AfmBOoq2Cra7RU0GS8jWjTHa_yP_TO6Df8jbRBqUQ3oLLt2v20RTDK7-&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy<\/a> who left Scotland to escape the wet weather and dark winters for a year-long \u201cadventure\u201d with her husband ended up living abroad for nearly two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Kate Orson, 45, who is originally from Hampshire, lives in the rural town of Greve south of <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/florence?srsltid=AfmBOoq8ckMJupvTmhkul4fZpN9KRRm8CLeodit5RrOs_IRFev9CFJjc&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florence<\/a>, in the mountainous region of Chianti in Tuscany, with her daughter, 13, and husband.<\/p>\n<p>When the couple first moved abroad from Glasgow, they went to <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/vietnam?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vietnam<\/a> and then Switzerland before settling down in Tuscany.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Glasgow, it rains every day,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd the winters I found quite dark and depressing.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEI_261246865.jpg\" alt=\"The Chianti Hills (also known as the Chianti Mountains) are a short mountain range (about 20 km) straddling the provinces of Florence, Siena and Arezzo that mark the eastern border of the Chianti region with the Valdarno and the Val di Chiana . My husband had been living in Glasgow for a long time and he was really up for it. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur thought was we\u2019d go for a year or two, just as an adventure, and then come back. But I\u2019ve just never gone back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Orson said her husband initially took on a teaching role in Vietnam, where the pair lived for four years before moving to Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"506\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEI_261252912.jpg\" alt=\"The main square of Greve in the Chianti Region of Tuscany, Italy. Her husband teaches on the outskirts of Florence while Ms Orson works as an author and <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/@kateorson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freelance writer<\/a> focusing on health, wellbeing and spirituality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re right on the edge [of the town], so we\u2019re surrounded by olive groves and forest,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s no other houses right next to us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, in Italy, there is wonderful food, and there\u2019s good weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut in the countryside, it\u2019s more of a traditional life. They have lots of little, traditional shops, family businesses. It\u2019s quite nice for a <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/at-40-moved-rome-happier-relaxed-parent-3714297?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slower pace, more traditional way of living<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"570\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEI_261246720.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3843760\"  \/>Ms Orson said her home is surrounded by olive groves and forestry<\/p>\n<p>But Ms Orson warned that moving to the Italian countryside, including tourist hotspots popular among British visitors, was not always as dreamy as Britons might expect.<\/p>\n<p>She pointed out that during her time abroad she had missed the British way of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe this is me and my experience, but when you\u2019ve lived somewhere for a long time like the UK, where the weather\u2019s bad and stuff, people idolise the places they go on holiday to. They think: \u2018Oh Italy, it must be so <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/i-left-uk-italy-women-treated-better-3806614?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wonderful to live in Italy<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you actually live in the country, it\u2019s quite different. (Photo by Jim Dyson\/Getty Images)\" class=\"wp-image-3843993\"  \/>The countryside near Greve in Chianti, Italy  (Photo: Jim Dyson\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when it comes to things like the weather, in England, you might think \u2018I\u2019ll go somewhere with better weather.\u2019 But actually it can be really hot in the summer and for most British people it\u2019s quite unbearable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Orson also said she missed being close to friends and family, as well as the \u201chomeyness of things being in your own language, going to the cinema or some kind of event that\u2019s in English\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI miss the life I never led, where you might go and see your parents on a weekend, and then go back to your life. Here it\u2019s more intense. When family come, they come for a week, or I\u2019ll go back for a week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Orson added that she had left Scotland \u201cbecause it was grey and dark, but I actually realised through the process of moving to a hot place, that it was a lot to do with my own mental health and stuff I had gone through in my life.
